Default KJ Noons refusing to fight Diaz

Source: KJ Noons Refuse to Take Fight with Diaz - MMAUniverse.com

EliteXc is looking more and more like a sinking everyday. Now one of their arguably most popular fighters in Nick Diaz is being denied a title shot because the champ doesn't think he deserves it.

Noons could do serious damage to Elite by not signing this fight and with them already struggling to get viewers and turn a profit every small thing is like another nail in the coffin.

Default K.J. Noons says Diaz not top conterder, Shaw says stripping title not out of question

here it is in a nutshell:
-- KJ doesn't think that Nick is the number one contender
-- Jared Shaw issued a deadline
-- KJ's manager said the following and scoffed at the deadline
"As far as Nick Diaz, he's not the No. 1 contender out there," Dion said. "To [EliteXC] he is. He's the number one (for getting) eyeballs to (watch) them. They're pushing on eyeballs versus a career move for a champion like KJ. KJ is really not the one who gets anything out of the fight. Diaz does and so does ProElite."

    read the interview here
and also gloats about the contract he was able to get for Brandon Vera
-- Now Shaw says stripping him of the belt is not out of the question
“I would never rule out that possibility,” Shaw responded when we asked him the question.

When asked what other options would be available to Noons if he chose not to fight the promotion’s number one contender for the lightweight title, Shaw hinted that it could be quite some time before fans get to see Noons fight again.

“I would say the only guarantee K.J. has is to pull up a chair and watch the event and get comfortable on that chair because he’ll be sitting for a little bit.”

I haven't seen any statements by Noons himself. From what i've read, it's Dion that says Diaz isn't the #1 contender. I don't think it makes much sense to say Noons is scared, when he has already faced Diaz. If i had to guess i would say this has a lot more to do with Dion than Noons. Although i think he is a pompous ass, i will say that he should be a little concerned for his fighter. Elite wants Diaz to be their champion, and one of the faces of their promotion. We all see the favoritism that has been shown to both Kimbo Slice and Gina Carano.

    Good find Opsy!

I'm definately a bit bias being that Nick is my favorite fighter, but I don't understand, this would be the second or third time Noons(or Noons manager) has turned down a rematch with Nick. I think Nick deserves a rematch. Ofcourse EltieXC has certain guys they want in the spot light as does every other MMA orginization in the world. I really hope this fight happens, and hope to see Nick wearing some gold around his waist soon!

KJ needs to get over himself, seriously. I don't know how he can say Diaz doesn't deserve a shot.

Yep, Elite definitely shows some favotism towards Diaz. Look at his last opponent, Denny. Elite wanted to make sure ( as possible ) Diaz would get a win so it wouldn't hurt his chance at a title shot.

I disagree, in the full interview with Noons's manager he says they want a KJ/Alvarez fight. A fight thats much tougher than a Diaz fight imo.

Yeah, it's probably a shot at Diaz if anything. I put that more as a reference to the altercation. But if Eddie is busy, why not a big payday in October because you don't know if the company is still going to be around after that.

Wow, there are so many parts to this story, its not funny.

As many know, I can't stand Nick Diaz. But for once, an EliteXC story involves him but is not about him.

KJ Noons and his manager Marc Dion. The main problem in this equation is once again, Marc Dion of City Boxing. This guy will go on and on about how he wasn't responsible for Brandon Vera sitting on the sidelines all that time. He complained (in court) how the UFC went behind his back to talk to Vera and explain their side. The two came to an agreement and Dion was left out in the cold. Well once again, Dion is doing all the managing of KJ Noons. This time, he even had a clause put into KJ's contract with EliteXC banning EXC from contacting KJ without going through Dion. This way, he holds all the cards. Similar to Vadim Finkelstein managing Fedor. The guy is pretending to be the Scott Boras of MMA/boxing and is getting ridiculous.

Dion goes on and on about Diaz not being the #1 contender. I agree that the three wins Diaz has had since losing to Noons were against inferior competition. But where else can EliteXC turn? Eddie Alvarez is who Dion is suggesting. But Dion knows full well that Eddie is likely not an option for EliteXC. Alvarez is getting married in mid-September with a honeymoon to follow. So the CBS show on Oct 4th is obviously out. Dion himself shows little care for Alvarez with this statement. ""Eddie Alvarez is getting married, but that's not our problem," Dion said. "People get married in five or 10 minutes." Guess you never got married and had a honeymoon, douchebag.

Some suggest that they put Noons against Alvarez at a Showtime event in November. While this would still likely lead to a short training period for Eddie, I'd be willing to bet he has bigger plans. Its been widely talked about that Alvarez and Joachim Hansen would like to have a rematch at the big New Year's Eve Dream show. After Hellboy won the GP, he himself said in the ring that he felt Eddie deserved the first shot at him since he replaced the injured Alvarez in the finals. So while he has a non-exclusive contract, Eddie would probably rather fight in that huge NYE show rather than a smaller EXC Showtime event. Monetarily, it probably makes a lot more sense as well. Lets not forget, Eddie has only fought once for EliteXC, on one of their small ShoXC event. So its not like he's a well known entity in North America/UK outside the hardcore fans.

Without Alvarez, who else under EXC contract other than Diaz deserve a title shot? No one. And while Noons was clearly beating Nick when the fight was stopped to to a cut, there is no guarantee that it would have continued that way over the next 4 rounds. It was enough of a controversial ending that it deserves a rematch. Throw in the garbage that happened in the ring after Noons' defense against Edwards, and the rematch with Diaz is obviously necessary.

Dion wants to talk about Nick not deserving a rematch. How is it that Noons fought for the title to begin with? He's gets KO'd Charles Bennett of all people, beats Edson Berto, and gets a title shot?

One of the problem lies in that Marc Dion is a boxing manager first and foremost. In that sport, managers have a lot of say as to who and when their fighter will fight, even champs. Its one of the problems with that sport. People will slam the UFC for not letting their fighters fight elsewhere, and I agree to a point. But by letting fighters fight all over leads to more power for some of these power hungry managers like Marc Dion or Vadim Finkelstein. Thus one of the pitfalls of non-exclusive promotional contracts.

But lets not heap all the pile of steaming pooh on Marc Dion. Jared Shaw of EliteXC is proving once again he's a chip off the old block (Gary Shaw). He's came up with this brilliant statement.

"[Noons] is earning in his next fight about $23,000 to show," Shaw said. "That to me is already more than any fighter who has under 10 fights is making. He's highly paid."

Wow, Shaw forgets that quickly the $175,000 that Kimbo got from EliteXC for that fight against Thompson. Last time I checked, he was well under 10 fights. This is the same Shaw that likes to hang out with Kimbo and his crew. The one who was screaming at the ref from ringside to "Stand 'em up!" when Thompson had Kimbo mounted and was elbowing him repeatedly in the face.

And for all the flogging White and crew get at Zuffa for extending contracts if guys won't fight, Jared Shaw did that exact thing yesterday. From MMAJunkie..."We have already sent a letter," Shaw said. "It doesn't extend for fights. It just extends for time. With that and time off for injury following the first Nick Diaz fight, pull up that chair if you're not willing to fight."

The amount of threats that Jared Shaw is throwing around is truly crazy. Looks like he's learned well from daddy.

What is also interesting is that I believe Gary Shaw owns KJ's boxing promotional rights as well. So its not like KJ is going to go back to boxing for a living at this point.

With Dion threatening to "expose" EliteXC, expect this story to get even more crazy.

    Alvarez > KJ Noons

Good to see that Gygax still "loves" Nick!

I'm with ya on Noons given a shot for no reason.
Maybe old man Noons had something to do with it.

K.J. has never really impressed me. His victory over Yves was a flash K.O. As was his loss to Krazyhorse. Neither performance says much. The Diaz fight was a stoppage due to a cut. Diaz is durable so who's to say Noons would have won had the fight been alowed to continue?

To me it looks as if Noons is playing a stupid game that he can end up losing. If I was Shaw I'd strip him for this crap and put him on the back burner for a year without the option to compete elsewhere. Off T.V. Out of the cage.

He's free after his contract. Until than why pull this crap?

Dion put a clause in Noons' contract that says if KJ wins a championship and is subsequently stripped of the title, his contract is nullified. In a way, that may be exactly what Dion/Noons wants. To put KJ on the open market. But he must realize that between this episode and his handling of Brandon Vera, many promotions will likely want no part of KJ Noons.

If he's stripped and his contract is nullified it would be the worst thing possible for Noons.

What Org would want to put up with another Drama Queen? A fighter who feels that he has to go stale mate with his president because he doesn't want to accept fights. This guy handling Noons is gonna drag Noon's name through the mud. This ain't a good stand point In my opinion.

Noons needs to come off this crap and defend against Diaz.
