Thiago Alves vs. GSP
With Alves beating Karo and GSP looking to avenge his loss to Serra its possible these two may be on a collision course. Both are very athletic with good stand up. I give GSP a sound edge on the ground especially in wrestling but Thiago is constantly improving his overall game. Who wins?

Of course GSP wins - he can lift more than 55 lbs now.

I'd give the edge to GSP. There stand-up is probably about equal, but GSP has the better ground game and is very good at taking people down.

I think GSP would win if the fight goes to the ground.

i think if they stood up it would be about equal but if they take it to the ground no doubt GSP would beat him. i would rather see them stand up for it would make an amazing fight.

I wonder if a Version 2.0 of this thread was made
would everyone vote the same?

i know i would. Alves did very well against Hughes, beat him standing and was able to survive without damage on the ground. What i did notice is that Hughes was still able to hold Alves on his back without alot of effort. Now whether this was Thiago just waiting for a standup or that he just could'nt do anything i don't know. What i do know is that GSP has become a very very dangerous fighter on the ground and you don't want to be stuck under him for any length of time. GSP easily submitted Hughes in their last fight and Matt Serra did'nt stand a chance and he's a BJJ Black Belt. GSP and Alves are near equals standing. I will give Alves a slight edge though, he has more snap in his punches and his leg kicks are vicious. GSP gets the edge on the ground, in wrestling, submissions, takedown defense and i possibly overall conditioning. I also give GSP an overwhelming advantage in being able to make weight.

I agree Crash. I think Alves has a slight advantage standing, but it'd be a moot point. GSP would just take him down and destroy him. Alves only chance would be catching him early like Serra in their first fight.

One more thing, people claim Anderson Silva is Pound for Pound the best, but I think GSP is way more well rounded.

my decision would stay the same, but even before alves vs hughes i thought alves would be gsp toughest fight right now. Fitch is good but gsp is better in every way and fitch doesnt really have the punchers chance......everyone does but its not likely. On the other hand gsp is better then alves in every way, but all would take is one good shot from alves and the fight could be over.......imo.

I agree, I also think GSP's chin gets questioned b/c he has been KO-ed in 1 out of 18 MMA fights. I believe that GSP has a very solid chin and even though he was stopped by Serra it was not a 1 punch KO; GSP was stunned and was not given the opportunity to recover and it was stopped after a flurry of punches was landed. I say Alves has more power in his punches but GSP is the more diverse striker and not bad KO power himself.....

GSP excels in two areas that Anderson does not, takedown defense and takedown ability. Anderson seems content to let his opponent decide if the fight goes to the ground or stays standing. He's just so confident in his BJJ and Muay Thai and he should be. GSP has the ability to put you where he wants you or keep you where you don't want to be. He's very sound in all aspects of the game. i do think that Silva is a better striker and his BJJ is better, but GSP can do it all at a level that exceeds just being good. If it was'nt for that loss to Serra i think GSP would be the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world.
