Default specificity

people have brought up how do i train for this or that, my advice would be to train exactly for that... if you want to run faster, do more running work outs, if you want jump higher do plyometric jumping exercises...

with that being said since ive gone full fledged into boxing lately, ive been taking boxing classes which are out of this world...
they are an hour long and combine endurance, strength, speed and footwork all in one..
the classes have 5 to 15 people in it ranging from pro boxers to me to hot chicks lol...

the instructors are all prof instructors as well....
its constantly moving from footwork, 20 sec break, pushups, 20 sec break, bag work, weights etc etc etc.. just tons of specific movement, combos etc etc again lol...

im huge into them so anyone else who wants to get into boxing and in shape should check them out... they had some videos of how the classes were run on youtube, if i can find it ill post the link..
just thought id share cause im pumped up after taking one

you bring up a good training principle, training with the sport in mind as opposed to just doing exercises and hoping they will improve athletic performance for your given sport. its not so much that if you want to run faster all you should do is run, there is alot more to it then that. basically a good trainer has either dissected the sport himself or read material that breaks the sport down into pieces. Running is a good example to use, especially sprinters. obviously you want to practice sprints but alot of sprinters engage in weight training. so how should they train? well here is one very well thought out example. when you run, you only have one foot on the ground at anytime. So in the gym you'd be wise to perform squats, deadlifts or any other exercise on one leg. plyometrics would include one legged movements as well. as for MMA, many movements use a staggered stance, never a parallel stance. so break out the resistance bands or cables and do presses and pulls using a staggered stance. even free weight movements can be adapted to staggered stance execution.
