"Just Getting Back" Foods?
Hey all, I'm 29 yrs old & I had been training in martial arts for quite some time for the love of it not so much for competion. Anyways, after a divorce 2 years ago I took some time off, started partying, drinking, smoking, eating crap foods, and sat inactively the whole time. During that time I gained a bit of weight as you could imagine. Now I am ready to start getting back into shape & start training. I am not looking to compete in Pride, I just want to get in shape, live healthy, & maybe get some abs popping, you know. I stopped drinking, smoking, stopped drinking soda pop, and started taking long walks to start.
My question is: What foods should I stay away from 100% and what food are a NECCESSITY?
Again, I'm not wanting to be a workout freak pack on tons of muscle, just want to live a healthier lifestyle. Things may change in the future, but my goal now is to just make basic changes for health reasons. Any advice is welcome, thanks!

I don't think it matters what foods you stay away from as much as what time of day you eat them...(There are obvious things you should avoid like excessive sugar or really greasy foods.) Carbs for example arn't nearly as bad as they are made out to be. Carbs will be one of you bodies main sources of energy throughout the day - if don't don't eat enough then your body will substitute muscle for food.
It is best to eat 5 or 6 small meals throughout the day rather than 2 or 3 big ones...I would try to eat your larger meals earlier in the day so you are only eating what you will burn off. If you only eat 1 or 2 large meals, your body is more likely to store up fat. If you eat several small meals, your body won't need to store away as much for later use.
Eat a good breakfast, take your vitamins, and stay active. They say the best time to walk or jog is right when you wake up because you will have an empty stomach and burn fat at the most optimal rate.
This is all stuff I have gathered from my own research and experience so I can't guarantee that it is 100% accurate, but seems to work for me - good luck

That’s good advice and I have come across the same stuff myself. You don’t really need to stay away from any food 100%. Or have to eat specific foods either. You could even eat some cake if you really wanted to. Just not too much. The biggest thing I have learned is to listen to you body. If you feel like crap after eating something don’t eat it. If you are hungry eat. Just do like Guile said. 5-6 meals a day. Carbs. Exercise.
You would be surprised how much Exercising will change you eating habits.

I've heard that night time is actually better to excercise. Has something to do with your immune system. I believe it was that you are more likely to get sick if you excercise in the morning. But before I get called a complete moron by anyone this is something I've only "heard" not saying that it is a fact.
P.S. Hooligan, you do realize the Olsen twins have been famous since they were infants right?

Uh, carbs have nothing to do with muscle retention, thats protein. And working out before breakfast is not good, it can actually be counter productive. Exercise when you can, and are willing to do so. Stay away from anything that won't help you reach your goals (sugar, large portions, junk, sugar, and sugar) until you get leaner. Then you can add a few things back in. Increase your activity and decrease your junk intake.

saying to avoid sugar is a broad statement since sugar is in almost anything we eat. if we're avoiding sugar does that mean we should avoid apples or carrots? of course not, what you want to avoid is refined sugars. foods that have added sugars like the majority of breakfast cereals, soft drinks and sweets.

The average person doesn't even know there is sugar in fruits and veggies. Stay away from junk. Hows that? If its not helping, its hurting.

i would consider myself pretty average but that does'nt mean i can't be informed or try to inform others. i can tell you from experience that if you tell a person to avoid sugar they start reading the nutritional information on everything and next thing you know they won't eat fruit because it has too much sugar. i was eating carrots the other night and my coworker looked at me and shook his head in disapproval. i asked him what was his problem and he told me "carrots are loaded with sugar" and are no good. he said this to me while drinking a Coke.
