Default Which gloves?

so i've decided to start training again and getting back into shape.
i got a bag for xmas and i'm looking for a mma gym to join in the next couple months.
i am looking for a set of gloves for the bag, but i want to be able to use them while grappling also. i have no idea of what kind of gloves to get. could i get some real mma gloves and hit the bag with them or do i need a different kind for the bag?
i was looking online and saw quite a few different kinds of gloves. some have a one piece padding on the top of the hand and knuckles, some are 2 piece padding. some have a thumb loop and some don't.
there are a couple places to buy mma gear in san diego so i'm gonna go look there, but don't really know what to look for.
any help would be great, TIA
i haven't hit a punching bag in over 15 years. it feels great, but i need gloves.

You don't want to use MMA gloves on the heavy bag unless you want to break your hand. Get you some standard boxing gloves.. higher ounce the better. I've always had great luck with Twins.. get you some gel wristwraps while you are at it

ok so should i get some standard 10 oz bag gloves or are you saying full on 16 oz boxing gloves?
also the gel wristwraps instead of the normal hand wraps? when i was younger my brother who is 17 years older then me use to box. and he taught me how. i had some 10oz gloves and cotton hand wraps. i found my gloves the other day in my moms garage and have been using them, but they are tight and completely dead.

so i should wear the gel wristwraps under the bag gloves, but without the cotton hand wraps. i really don't want to mess up my hands or anything.
i'm looking to have at least one armature fight in 2009, so the last thing i need is an injury before i even start training.

Gel mainly because I was unsure if you knew how to wrap up or not and gel is easier. As for glove ounce, I use 14oz bag.

I have Gel wraps, they''re nice but you might find it difficult to slip your bag gloves over them. They're a bit bulkier then traditional wraps. Once they're on though you hands will be safe as can be.

i get most of my gear from Title Boxing. Thier in store brand stuff is pretty good most of the time and the price is good. I bought the traditional style wraps that have about 30 inches of Gel material at the beginning of the wrap. I also have tried the Gel style under gloves that remove the need for wraps. They're great too but also make getting boxing gloves on a tight fit, especially if you're working out alone.

Have you tried / own Title's classic training boxing gloves? I'm in the market for some 16oz gloves but not sure which ones to get.

I have used fairtex. They have many types of gloves amongst a lot of other gear that they sell. It is pretty good equipment and not to pricey. I paid around $120 for my set of sparring gloves.

Muay Thai Boxing Gloves - Twins Special, Windy, Thaismai, Raja, KOMBAT - page 1

Here are some from my brand of choice. Fairtex is great, but Twins is just as good and cheaper. Windy also makes a good glove IMO.

Are these the ones your talking about?
TITLE Classic Hook-and-Loop Training Gloves from Title Boxing
you can't beat the price and for a basic glove they should be just fine for most aspects of boxing. They probably won't wear as long as a more expensive glove, the foam will get dense more quickly and the seams and material will wear quicker as well. It really depends on how often you use them. Think of them like you would shoes. More expensive shoes may offer better performance but you're still going to have to throw them away at somepoint.

I'm trying this class out at Sanda Kung Fu (also go by Boston Kick-Boxing). There is a Muay Thai place near my work called Sityodong, which I was going to try out, but they are like 3x's as expensive as the Sanda place. Sityodong is where Kenny Florian and a few other mma fighters train Muay Thai, so I guess thats why they jack up the price.

I don't know if your near either of them, Sanda Kung Fu is off of Down Town Crossing on the orange line and Sityodong is off of Sullivan Square T stop on the orange line.

Sityodong is the best MMA gym in the state so you should definatley check that place out. alot of guys train there, Kenny, Marcus Davis trained there for his last fight. I would go there if I lived close enough, but I dont at all.

vegas... if you are looking to get back in to shape, heavier gloves will benefit you. 16oz training gloves are good "all around" gloves for hitting bags, pads, and people. Personally I use Fairtex BGV1 Training gloves but there are a lot of good options out there.

I prefer mexican style wraps but know some people who swear by gel wraps. Especially those who get sore knuckles from punching bags. Combat sports makes a pretty good Gel Shock Handwrap that incorporates 120" of elastic wrap in addition to the standard "gel glove"
