Default Shoulder Problems

Need a little help guys. For a while I've had shoulder issues. Not really sure what's going on but every now and then they really give me some pain during certain movements. Like currently the motion to shoot a basketball - when I lift my elbows up I have this pain in the front of my shoulders. I've also started punching a heavy bag for fitness which hasn't helped although I've had this issue for a while in both shoulders.

It doesn't feel like a muscle pain at all and it is annoying as it holds me back.

Anyway. Any thoughts?

I was put in a standing arm bar and fell and landed on my shoulder. I also have had that front of the shoulder pain. I had an MRI. I was told by an orthopedic that it was a tear in a muscle that connects the top front chest to the front of the shoulder. He named the muscle. He told me to lay off from any shoulder or chest exercises for 3 to 4 months. I did not do that because I do not like to be out of my routine. I ended up tearing my rotator cuff and had to have surgery. The muscles around the tear ended up picking up all the slack, but could not take the stress that I was putting on them. I kept on lifting heavy through the pain and irritation.

I am not telling you what to do, but if you have insurance I would recommend getting an MRI on it to make sure exactly what it is. You do not want to have to get shoulder surgery. I was out of my routine for a long time and my right arm shrank from not being able to do anything.

Always take the time needed to heal an injury, most of us hate taking time off but being hard headed about a serious injury is only going to delay the healing process. Luckily i havent had any problems with my shoulders "YET"...KNOCK ON WOOD....Listen to LABJJ bayou hes been there and good luck with it man

Go to an orthopedist! The shoulder is among the most complicated and delicate joints in the body. An injury to that joint can sideline you for months and can really ruin your routine for a long time after that.

One thing to do as a preventative measure is to do some rotator cuff and smaller shoulder muscle exercises.

It sounds to me like you either have some tendonitis going on in your biceps or you have a shoulder impingement/possible rotator cuff damage. The positions of your hands, when shooting a basket, internally rotate your shoulder. Which, not to get into an anatomy lesson, but your rotator cuff fastens in on your upper arm bone (humerus) and when you internally rotate your arm/shoulder and raise them up...it basically crunches that tendon against your AC joint. It usually happens as a result of repetitive motions; which can cause tendonitis and even bursitis in the shoulder. As, there is a bursae sack beneath your deltoid (shld muscle) and when inflames it decreases that space even further and increases the pain even further. Left untreated eventually the rotator cuff tendon involved will tear.

Get it checked by a Doc...preferably an Orthopedic. Stop anything and everything that makes it hurt worse. Ice it. Get some PT.

PS: I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night, but I am a therapist...lol.

Thanks for the help guys. Definitely a nagging issue that probably won't go away without some doc assistance. Another motion (although probably similar in movement) is if I have my arms by my side and then lift it straight up with my palm facing to the floor it gives a lot of discomfort. Anyway...I'll probably have to save up for a little while and then go see the doc.

In a nutshell...that is one of the tests we do to assess an impingement. I'd say by the sounds of it, you've got an impingement...some form of bursitis or tendonitis...maybe even a little of all. And, that means with normal everyday tasks too. i.e. use the other arm to open/close doors, get stuff in/out of the fridge, etc. Seek out a Doc as soon as you can but in the mean time ice it down, and don't use that arm more than you have too. Rest and Ice are the best thing while you're inflammed. Just make sure to put a towel or something between the ice and your skin. You don't want freezer burn on top of it all. 20 mins ice/20 mins without ice.
