Default Your potential?

How would you rate you athletic potential? Many times i think we look in the mirror and underestimate our own abilities. We look at fighters like GSP or Randy Couture and write them off as freaks of nature when the majority of us have the same potential. We tell ourselves we'll always be fat, or that i can never hit as hard as Chuck does. We fail before we even get started and can never fully realize our own potential.

There are people that are born special. I don't think every human being has what it takes to be a great fighter for example, no matter how hard they might try. But this is not an excuse for not trying. A human only uses a very small percentage of his physical potential - he uses his full potential in life-death situations, which in my opinion proves that it's all mostly mental, not physical.
Try hard and you might suprise yourself.

hmmm... i like this question... do you simply mean statistically? like how fast or high you can go?? or do you mean athletic performance?? which would include more of a mental combined with physical aspect

its 50/50 mental and physical......if your in the zone mentally when lifting you may be able to pump out an extra 4 reps say....but if not you may not be able to do the required amount.
there is always a key to achieving good things for each person....just up to you to find them out!

I think a lot of atheletics and life in general is in the skull. I agree that a lot of people never hit their full potential secondary to the fact that they don't push themselves hard enough. I've always been one to try and squeeze a little extra out of each exercise or cardio I do...that's how you improve, but unfortunately some people get a little winded or sweat a couple of drops and then throw in the towel.

Using what you know about yourself, your training mentality and past progress, how would you rate yourself in terms of potential. I personally don't believe i will ever reach my true potential because while my athletic abilty improves very quickly when i train i don't have the mentality to keep pushing. I lose my motivation and focus along the way. Sometimes months or even a year goes by before i try to pick up where i left off and by then the majority of my progress is gone and i am back at square one. So for me, potential is limited by my state of mind and commitment to what i am doing as opposed to any physical roadblocks.

I think it's a combination of mentality plus desire. Everybody has the mental fortitude to be the best at something, it's just finding that something that they truly want. I am sure there are thousands of people that share GSP's physical abilities that aren't interested in being fighters. Instead they become doctors, lawyers, CEOs, teachers, or whatever else the truly desire.
