Default Carbs!!!

some people love them, some people hate them..

its a fact that you NEED them... i am familiar with when, and how much etc etc... but i always mix the info that ive learned with that ACTUAL practice of it... i am struggling with carbs now because when i eat the amounts im supposed to, i gain weight and fat... when i cut them a bit (but not too much i look better for sure) so i am having trouble figuring all this out....

so tell me about your own personal views on carbs... forget the books and what youve seen, how have you reacted to various amount of carb intakes...

do you love them or hate them!

i work 3rd shift at a somewhat physical job, i don't sleep right and i do exercise. So i know for a fact that i need carbs and i do my best to get them even if they're from a less than ideal source. I've never gained too much weight from excess carbs since from experience i know when to step back a bit. Anyone who fights or trains hard for any sport needs carbs. It bothers me when really active people try to cut carbs out of thier diet. its a recipe for disaster.

i guess im more talking about:

the type of carbs you eat, when you eat them, and what the effects are on you... forget about fighting for the time being, im just talking about all of us; the average physically active person... i want to cut out some of the fat i have gained on me, but still want energy... its a tough balence

I favor carbs with
-a low glycemic index
-low glycemic load
-fiber
-vitamins and minerals

Forget about whether they're simple or complex carbs, that doesn't matter one bit. And luckily all four of those qualities come together in fruits and vegetables. So not only are they good for you, they taste good as well.

When your carb source contains fiber and v+m it automatically also has an impact on their GI and GL, which means you can eat more of that stuff. Whereas something like bread or pasta are just stacked with carbs (and usually high GI carbs too) which means you would have to settle for very little to keep your protein-carb -ratio where it needs to be.

My daily carb sources are oatmeal, fruit, vegetables and some dairy products.
40% of my diet consists of carbs, so don't call it a "low carb diet". Losing weight is easy this way and I feel very energetic as well.
So there.

I still remember our prior debate over complex vs. simple carbs. Since then i always look at them as refined vs. un-refined. Its a simple way to make the better choice. Vegetables and Fruits are never a bad choice and when it comes to grains, whole grains are the way to go. I've also learned that alot of products in the USA are made with enriched flour which is essentially waste material that food manufacturers add vitamins and minerals to in an effort to boost profits. Basically the closer it is to coming from the ground the better off you are.

I try to stray away from sugars, most of the day. About the only exceptions I have to my personal rule for sugars are:

1. It's ok to have them with breakfast or early in the day...but only natural sugars...like fruits and veggies...and as a bonus your body burns around 25% of those calories in the digestion process...plus they don't radically effect your blood sugar levels.

2. Shortly after a hard cardio session...to replenish my blood sugar levels...but I have more on this later...in a thread I'm going to post later on today.

3. If it's my cheat meal or snack a few times in the week...but very infrequent.

Sugar makes your body produce insulin which triggers energy storage into fat. So, I try to avoid it as much as possible. I almost never take in sugars late in the afternoon or evening...unless, like I mentioned earlier, it's a cheat meal.
