High School Wrestling
I joined my very serious high school wrestling team. We have made states the past 3 years and placed under 3rd place the past 3 years straight. I had my first hard practice with a new coach. I honestly can't feel my body. 3.5hours of crazy drills. I felt like throwing up through the first half of it. I only ate 2 granola bars, and a small peice of beef jerky before practice though, and im in good shape. What should i eat before practice, because if i work out on an empty stomach i will definetly start heaving.

The most sensible thing I can think of is a basic meal with a good amount of sugar / protein. Protein shakes are the equivilent to a meal and they have a nice deal of sugar. Its what I use if I dont want to take the time to make a meal before working out

First, what time is your practice? Is it close to lunch? Or later in the evening? I never ate before practice but there were some people on the team who did. But even not eating you might often find yourself wanting to upchuck. I found that just eating my fruits and vegetables along with my meats and carbs, was good enough for me. My recommendations are bananas or apples.
Train hard. Conditioning is your best weapon in most HS wrestling matches.

Keep your carb and protein intake up, drink lots of water.
Wrestling practice is intense... I know. Don't give up.
Might possibly consider some supplements to help you heal faster (and if you do, drink probably even more water, because many can dehydrate you faster). I don't know about your team, but my team the coach really overtrained us, it was way exhausting. In retrospect, I think if I had something to help me heal a little faster (most of the guys on the team took something to help them out) I would've done a little better. I also know I could've done it and still easily made weight, I usually came in about 5 or 6 pounds under with my sweats on...

i have wrestled for 7 years my best advice is like above but its also helpful to practice on ur own time too. like do runs in the mornings before school. then you will be prepared for the cardio workouts. in my HS we had a 5 am practice that ran till classes started which was like 8 so we had half an hour to clean up getting to class at 8:30 in the afternoon we had practice from 325 to 645. and saturdays it was from 7 to 1. so hang in there man it may be hard for the first couple of weeks but then you will get used to the pain and have great cardio

Actually i mstarted to have secound thoughts about continueing wrestling...Its not because of the intensity, or insane work outs. I start right after school, and go till 545 or so. I get home around 630, then by that time i eat n all tha tgood stuff and i cant do my homework. Im an honor roll student right now, im gunna have to work it out, or just stop so i can concentrate on school work.(sounds lame, but hey, i know whats more important in life)

I remember those days. We only had one truck when I was in my freshman year and I wasn't old enough to drive. So every day I had to find a ride home after practice, and had to do my homework in the mornings, in early classes, at breaks etc. It was a pain in the butt, however I was offered scholorships for my efforts when it was all over and I use the techniques often in my work too. I agree that your grades are most important, but don't take the decision lightly, you'll never have an opportunity like that again.

My coach really got on us about this because a lot of the wrestlers said something similar. Thing is, generally you have Friday and Saturday nights to yourself (besides an occassional tournament) and you always have Sunday off. When I wrestled it went something like this:
Monday
Class: 8:00 - 3:00
Wrestling 3:15 - 6:45
Homework/free time: 7:00 - 11:00
Tuesday
Class: 8:00 - 3:00
Wrestling 3:15 - 6:45
Homework/free time: 7:00 - 11:00
Wednesday
Class: 8:00 - 3:00
Wrestling 3:15 - 6:45
Homework/free time: 7:00 - 11:00
Thursday
Class: 8:00 - 3:00
Wrestling 3:15 - 6:45
Homework/free time: 7:00 - 11:00
Friday
Class: 8:00 - 3:00
Wrestling 3:15 - 6:45
Social life: 7:00 +
Saturday
Social life
Sunday
Social life + homework if needed
Of course, sometimes we had duels on Thursday, so that changed Thursday's schedule a bit every so often, sometimes there were tournaments on pretty much any day besides Sunday, so that'd change that a bit. However, most of the time I got by with this. If I didn't have homework, I'd stay after practice and work some drills with the coach because he always stayed after for that kind of stuff...
I'm not sure if yours is that "easy" though, look at Karhopper's schedule, man that would've been stupid hard.

I always ate bananas and drank lots of water since I sweat so much during practice. That's all I needed. I guess you could try the sugar rush but I always crashed hard before practice was over and was dead tired.

Well i actually just tried eating some granola, half a bottle of gatorade and some water work pretty well. I havent felt to sick, except when doing 'spin drills', they kill me, but i feel good after.

Right on. I always stayed away from Gatorade. I'm not saying it's bad, I just couldn't handle all the sugar. Spin drills were killer, and bear crawls then stairs after the crawls at the end of practice were pretty hardcore too. Man you're making me miss my time in wrestling since I'm a lazy butt now. I always was so dead after practice but felt so good after I got rested up. I need to get in shape again. How about that? Me getting inspired to get in shape by an internet forum.

Sugar is pretty bad, it'll give you a short energy burst then you'll crash. Same with starchy food like white rice and potatoes. Eat like brown rice, etc. for your carbs.
Edit: Well maybe not bad, but certainly not as good.

try some fruit (apples are great at maintaining a balanced natural energy level) oatmeal is great as well....will stick to your ribs and keep ya from starving... just make sure you give yourself an hour between eating and practise to let the food settle....water is vital ....hydrate early and youll notice a difference.......some protein wouldnt hurt either ...like some eggs or a shake with your meal......keep up the great work ... a lot of us old guys wish we could wrestle in high school again so do us a favor and enjoy it!!!!!!!!!!

yea seriously man my schedule was hell and i maintained a b average. plus i was a sponcer for juggling, anime, and origami clubs at our school. and maintained caddying as a job. i didnt quit. just try to stick with it or you will have regrets
fruits have sugar so they burn during practice. try milk products like yogurt with granola on top it wont stay in your system long and u can burn it off plus some water weight

Well latley its been a pain. Missed some practice because a death of a friend, doctors appointments n all that. But I do like wreslting. With 10 days of experience i wrestled varsity 135pounds, resulting in me getting pinned in the first period of coarse.... which was to be expected with less then 2 weeks experience, and no JV experience or being at a meet for that matter... but hey i tried my best and i know im improving daily.
