I wanna be along the sames lines. Whatever division I fight in I want to be at the top.

Crashti, I'm in CT so let me know if you're fighting any local shows in Mass (which I hear there's quite a few of) and I'll try to come check it out.

i certainly will, but i think it'll be at least a year before i fight in a real event. there are a few guys who do local shows at the school i am going to and i'd like to be able to compete at their level before getting an ass kicking in front of an audience.

the school i am at has matches between club members on a regular basis. the place is pretty informal and laid back so i think its a "when we feel like it" type of thing. my kind of place really. looking forward to a few months worth of tapping out.

Yeah me too. I really wanna get a handle on keeping composure while getting shots to the face. I'm sure the first few times it's hard to keep composure.

Bas has some good drills for leearning to keep your eyes open when people are throwing bombs at you. have you seen the part in hi sbook where he has the guy backed up against a fence? the drill is to just throw at the guy and have him block. you close your eyes you get hit. good drill.

Starting at my new school tonight. Very excited. 1 hr. of No Gi NJJ, 1hr open gym which will be spent sparring MMA and 1 hr Jeet Kun Do concepts. The JKD concepts class is almost all sparring in different situations. So you'll spar people and either use contrasting styles and stuff like that. so Bigger vs. Smaller, wrestling vs kickboxing, each person wrestling while one person has a training knife and such.

Very excited, the facility looks amazing from the website pics and the teacher so far has been great via email.

I'm giddy at the thought of three solid hours of training. Just hope I can move enough to get to the gym tomorrow.

if your training 3 hours a day a few days a week you;re going to improve so fast. you're making my school look like a fast food joint while you're eating at a 4 star restaurant. crazy. i think you'll really like the JKD concepts. thats the faction of JKD that i think Bruce would've agreed with.

When I saw that the class was labeled "JKD Concepts", I knew that the teacher knew his stuff. He also talks about belts not being an accurate measure of someones talent. There's two seperate classes for BJJ, one that focuses on techniques and situations and another that goes over what you need to know for your tests.

That was big for me cause my old school was kind of a belt factory and I never liked the cockiness that some people got because thier belt was a different color.

Well, I am very sore. Rolled with the teacher for an hour and got taught the basics of position. One of the students came in (with about 15-20lbs of muscle on me ) and we rolled then put the gloves on and did some light sparring. Then an hour of JKD with sparring and drills.

My knees hurt, my shins hurt, my neck hurts....

It was the best 3 hours of my life!! Learned more in that three hours than in three year of traditional martial arts. Also just want to say that I had done training videos for BJJ and submissions. I am now fully convinced that all videos will do is give you a FALSE sense of skill that will get you tapped. Good video or not, without someone else who is trained to practice with you lose out on so many subtle things like foot position, hand position, control points that are VITAL to success. Only move I really knew how to do correctly was a guillotine...and that's not a very hard move.

Well of course you need to practice the moves you can't just watch a training video like it was the Matrix or Troy or Little Mermaid (a regular movie) and then get up at the end and say good work out. you gotta watch it a bunch of times and do the moves on someone and you gotta be in shape you can't learn the moves and be 200 lbs. 50% body fat and 1 min. of stamina. Videos can help some ppl and not others depends on who you are.

Honestly, videos will only help if they are in addition to supervised training. Otherwise, you have no one who knows what they're doing to watch and make sure you're doing it correctly. There's so many variables, especially in BJJ and submissions that if your hand is an inch off then you're sunk and the only way to make sure your doing it correctly is if you have a knowledgable instructor to watch you.

Hi guys, I am 16 and want to start MMA, but there are no gyms anywhere near my house. The closest one is about a half an hour away.

I am from New Jersey.

What would you do?
