Default MMA Training

I have noticed a lot of comments from users in this forum regarding a desire to get into MMA training but not knowing where to start. This is where your friendly neighborhood gothabilly will come into play. If you just post on this thread info about your location, city and state for example, I will then post a reply with a list of schools and gyms in your area that may be able to help you out.

I do however recommend that you examine the schools thoroughly before commiting to them. I cannot tell you how good they are, only where they are.

Also here is a suggestion, coming from someone who has been involved in the MMA community for some time now, the training is hard. Very hard. It involves a lot of dedication. If you think that you can go to class once a week and be fine then you're wrong. I would attend classes 4 days a week and hit the gym the other 3.

And another thing, in case you're curious, it hurts, a lot. Now I don't want to discourage you guys from the fight game, I love it. I just want to be open and honest with everyone about what it's like. If you are really interested in making a career out of this, then it is going to take a lot of sacrifice. Good luck and I hope you do well.

I live in Wallingford CT, near New Haven.

I already know of a few gyms. Wondering if you know of some I may have missed.

North Haven and Middletown are closest in that list.

North Haven I'm assuming would be Andrew Callendrelli's BJJ school? I belive he got his purple from Horacio Gracie. I also know of The Dog Pound in Meriden CT which is supposed to have some tough guys.

Haven't heard of one in Middletown though so thatd would be great. Or North Haven if I'm thinking of a different school.

This is just a sugestion. If You're wanting to get into MMA and the nerest school is far away, Go to there once. Most of the time it's free your first time. And Video tape the whole class. This way you can watch the tape at home and train with you and some friends. You can get the basicsdown very well this way. Simple arm bars, knee bars, kamora's, mounts, reverses, ect. And also punching combo's. Basics. Try it out. I'm going to bet that if you do this, after 1 month of at home training doing this 5 days a week, twice aday, you'll be ready for your first Amature event. Then you'll decide how comitted you are to the sport and willing to travle. because lets face it. If you want to train with great fighters and people who know what they're talking about, you're going to probably have to travel.

an interesting thought, but to be honest i don't think training with a group of friends for a month is'nt going to make you ready to fight with a guy who has probably trained with guys who beat on him daily. the only way to really get better at MMA is to train with people who can beat you or at least test your limits.

And no dought I agree with you completly. But, for those few who can't afford to make a langthy trip every week or few days or whatever, it could help them out. It's no substitution for the one on one training or for live sparing, it's just somthing that can help.

hey guys, you can look up schools for yourself here. just type in your state and town and bam!! you'll have a list of schools. there is even a BJJ School in Alaska so everyone should be able to find a place to train.

Finally found a school with MMA near me! For anyone in CT it's www.modernselfdefense.com. They have BJJ, JKD and MMA classes as well as open gym times. Going for my free first night (BJJ class then open gym with some MMA guys and ending the night with a JKD class. Now that's a sweeeeeeet night) to check it out but from what I've seen so far and talking to the owner it looks like a good fit for me.

Finally get to officially start in MMA!

Thanks Brandon. Most likely going to stay at the top of welterweight. I'd be at the bottom/middle if I went for middle. We'll see how the weight training goes though. Have you fought any small/local promos yet?
