MMA is nothing more than a combination of every style. no traditional style encompasses all the skills you see in the UFC, you have to cross train in many style. such as kickboxing, wrestling, BJJ, boxing etc.,.

If you start standing and end it on the ground that could be anything. If you just punching and knock them down then hit them on the ground that is boxing with a little BJJ. If you throw a few punches then go for a takedown thats boxing, wrestling and BJJ. If he throw a few punches and get taken down then submitt them, thats Boxing and BJJ. If you are throwing kicks before going to the ground that is kickboxing (then wrestling or BJJ or both on the ground). If you go for a clinch after some punches or kicks and throw elbows to drop him that is Muay Thai or if you take him down from the clinch that is wrestling and Muay Thai. Or if you throw a few punches and Judo throw him that is Boxing, Judo and BJJ. Or you could use a sambo throw in place of Judo for Boxing Sambo and BJJ. Or while standing you could throw a spinning back kick or spinning back fist and that would be TKD. So you see there are lots of things that involve different types of skills in MMA that start standing or end on the ground. And you could substitute boxing or kickboxing or muay thai with savate or even Karate as some people do.
There are so many styles that we usually just break it down into three different types. Sprawl n brawl. which is avoiding the opponets takedown and knocking them out standing the only time you would go to the ground is to finish them after you drop them. Ground n Pound, my favorite, which is taking your opponent down and controling them on top while landing punches or elbows (or Knees and stomps in Pride) untill the fight is stoped. And Lock n Choke where you get the fight to the ground (dosn't really matter weather you are on top or bottem) get a good position and lock in a submission (sometimes using ground n pound to set up the submission). Sometimes people refer to a fourth as Lay and Pray which is being inactive and waiting for you opponent to make a mistake and capatlizing on it OR it is laying on top of your opponent on the ground and trying to tire him out.
I hope that cleared some things up for you.

Boxing for stand-up, wrestling for control, jiu-jitsu for submissions and working off your back.
There you go. Also, those are interchangable with a lot of things, like Muay Thai and Kickboxing can replace boxing...

Well I don't train in MMA. I hope to some day. There isn't a good gym around here. But untill recently I boxed at a local gym. (I decided to take a month off from hard training before I leave) Fights were set up through the gym and took place at the gym. Once you know enought not to get seriously hurt they will let you fight. Shouldn't take too long.

To start competing, you need the backing of a Dojo, a Dojan, an MMA gym.. something that proves you have credentials and you arent just some guy off the street.. some smaller promotions don't care but more than not, they arent the kind you would want to fight for in the first place. There are fight promoters and matchmakers and if you are good enough in the smaller shows, they will come to you.. UFC and PRIDE arent open entry.

my trainer says three days a week for about a year is enough to get your first fight. Personally, I train in Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and a little bit of wrestling and Judo.

Don't know exactly what you are asking here. But a low rung fighter in the UFC makes about 2k to fight and double that if the win. (minus training costs you will be lucky if you break even)

alot of lesser fighters do have real jobs as well as fight. however if you really have skills you can teach on the side and don't have to work a real job. however, as Ivan Salavary said, if you want to be a fighter you'd better have your finances in order.

Muay Thai for stand-up and jiu jitsu for ground. And please understand that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the same as Jiu Jitsu. The kimora and umaplata didnt exactly originate in brazil.
