So, I finally went tonight to check out Warrior Martial Arts Centre and see what the guys do. We started off with doing workouts for the first 30mins, laps, rolls, lunges, squat jumps, pushups, situps w/ medicine balls, etc. Then we got into lessons and today, the head instructor moved to having the class practice armbars, for the past month they had been practicing passing guard.
So, he went through the basic armbar from the mount position, going over exactly what you want to do, and then after doing that for a few minutes, he showed other things you can do to get the armbar, and transitions into things like the triangle choke. It was a lot of fun but it was obvious that I was learning and I had a lot to work on which was expected
In between we did some rolling and just practicing trying to get in advantagous positions with the other guy. I learned the side mount and the... scarf(?) mount.
The guys were all good people, and were patient with me. The head instructor was very easy going and very good at conveying the instructions and what you want to do - he was very meticulous which is definitely a good thing. I definitely want to go back once I get the money - as it turns out I have to pay 3 installaments of $350 + GST (post dated is okay), to join up.
.... I think I'm forgetting something... oh wait....
I met CARLOS NEWTON.
I got a quick tour and there was a guy in the weight room, he looked familiar but I didn't bother him. I went around and met some other guys and I asked one guy "Was that Carlos Newton I saw?" and he said yeah, he actually does instruct now and again whenever Terry (head instructor) is pressed for time or has other commitments. Anyways, a bit later in the class, I took a water break and he was on the treadmill and we started conversation, I introduced myself and he did the same, and I told him that I knew who he was from his matches in the UFC.
He was a very nice guy and all smiles. After the class we ran into eachother again and he gave me some encouragement that it does get easier and that I'd eventually be able to roll with the guys consistently and said he'd hope I would come back. Funny side note, he did complement me on my eyes, said he's always been fascinated with the facial features of Asians, lol.
Anyways, it was a good time, and I do want to keep going. The main thing is that I really need to get in shape for this class, and then there's the money factor, haha.
