Default GNP in the Guard

I love Wrestling and aside from Muay Thai and boxing it is my favorite combat sport. I of course want to use these wrestling skills in a MMA enviroment( I do practice submissions) so I look into studying ground and pound. I was practing this recently when I relized how hard it was to do effective GNP from the ground. Are there an things that are more effective in guard, any pointers guys?

Elbows, knees, forearms, head pressure, hammer fist. Your elbow is VERY HARD, and even short shots with the elbow is damaging and painful. Also, when using the hammer fist, strike with the bone on your wrist, not the padded hand.

My partners are tall with lanky arms. They grab my wrist and this frustrates me alot. should I position my hands behind his head or body?

the cross face!! just keep you elbow/forearm buried in your opponents face. whenever he tries to control your head and neck he just puts more pressure on his own face. its also annoying and can really break a guys concentration.

You can try that, but learn to use the elbows even when they are holding the wrist. Always work against the thumb to get out of their grip, even when striking with the elbow, make the action against the thumb.

watch Fedor's first fight with Nogueria to get a seminar on GnP. Fedor puts on a clinic against one of the best submission guys in the sport. don't watch the fight as a spectator, really watch it as if you were trying to learn from it. watch how Fedor responds to Nog trying to maintain wrist control. watch where Fedor positions his legs, his body and his arms. i often watch fights in slow motion to really get a good look at the technique being used. GnP is as much an art as BJJ is. learn to do what Fedor does and you won't need elbows.

Thanks for the help the crossface is quite effective. I also found a technique that works quite well for me. When someone grabs my wrists as usual I just turn myhand toward there body and throw the elbow. I also picked up some things from Fedors fight. thanks guys.

I'll quote Matt Serra on this one:

If Im in someone's guard, I tend to sort of elevate up almost like you're going to stack them, then come down with a bunch of punches or elbows. BUt it is hard.

GNP though from the side mount!

Oh Lord, dude on bottom is in trouble! You can knee them, or try to crucifix them out and then reign down with your elbows. I love that!

Espcially since my Submission game looks like something out of Chuck NOrris Judo for Kids video from Century!

I'm 5'11 but short. It's hard to explain. People at my gym call me the "Retarded Version of Mike Tyson"
(Who was 5'11)

And they'd be right.
