Default Any MMA Fighters out there?

Do any of you compete in MMA even on a amateur level? If so tell me about it and what it is like to step into the cage. What style do you use and how did you preform in your fight(s). If you are not a MMA fighter but would like to be how do you train and how often?

i am personally going to be the pride lightweight champ someday but my first fight in mma will be april or so . i currently train with a guy who is an incredible boxer and has some jiu-jitsu skills, i will be going to train with miletich in the spring for a month or so and when i get back i will do as much fighting as i can (not street fighting) from mma , boxing , and grappling tourneys just so i can get as much ecspierens (how the crap do you spell that) as i can , and then in the winter i am going to brazil for 3 months to train with brazillian top team , so that will be fun . when i get back i will find out how to get my green card and go and train at miletich and just do lots of fighting in japan and wherever else i can . pretty much if you whant it bad enough you can have , just dont give up no matter what anyone says, and dont settle for being averadge try and push your self in every thing you do . i hope it helps and who knows maybe someday we may see eachother on ppv.

Very interesting, I was thinking on moving this summer to flordia to train with American Top Team. Right now I train with a coach who teaches me grappling and boxing, I also take sperate Muay Thai classes. I am thinking of fighting in some amateur shows in Kentucky and then going to Canada to fight in TKO. I believe American Top Team will get me to the level I need to be to fight in big time shows. I am 185 lbs right now so I will drop to the Welter weigth division. I have put lots of thought behind MMA and decided although I am qualified to do be able to have many jobs I would rather do nothing but fight in MMA. Its good to hear from someone so dedicated and confident with similiar goals as mine good luck in your path to the belt!

I forgot to ask, what do you prefer to do stand up, ground fight, or are you comfortable at both?

i know what you mean about being able to do lots of other stuff but just choosing mma , if im not at work or church , i am working out to be able to perform at that athletic level , eating healthy and clean for the same reason, or training to fight , it is a HUGE passion of mine i love it so much. i dont get it when people say stuff like ''ya that would be fun to do that for a living but i think i will do somthing i dont like insted ''. i know that anything i am willing to sacrifice so much to do what i love , i would live in a cardboard box if i had to just so i could pay my doos at miletich. my mom keeps telling me that i wont make it but that only drives me to train harder all the time . anyways i am 17 so i have a long time to train for it , it will be a ride of a liftime. good luck to you to.

I am also constantly reminded how difficult it is by my parents. I'm 18 so as soon as I get the money it's off to flordia for me. I like to mix things up as I feel comfortable standing and on the ground. I prefer to stand however because that is where I think I can control my opponent the most. Do you work out at a gym or do you have a set at home?

you can just walk into these elite teams in the world at 18 or so?? might wanna wait a bit for your bones to thicken and finish growing out in general first... there are some monsters that train at those places... its so rare you see guys do well at such a young age, (nick diaz, thiago alves, GSP) come to mind.. but alot of guys get burnt out before they peak if they start so early it seems

I would love to let my bones thicken but I am so focused on my goal. I know the younger I am the more chance of injury but I guess thats the price you pay. Thanks for the advice GSPalltheway, where do you train?

i think you have premature belt syndrome. there are way many safer and better things to do with your life than train in MMA. most people who think they can be an "ultimate fighter" will never cut the grade.

by all means dotn let my rational thinking get you down but dont put to many eggs in one basket, 17 and 18 are very young, i am ~22, only 4 years older and have a little desire to fight MMA, looks fun, gives you tonnes of respect, you will look buff, be able to but into action all your practise, but lets be honest if you are so concerned with doign something and putting your soul into be aware that not every guy who steps into the ring will be the next matt hughes.

and about the ijury that is a very naive and immature way to look at it, lets hear from you after your first fight when you get a low kick and block it the wrong way, shattering your shin into pieces. fight career over, $$$$ of medical bills and out of work for months, not to mention having a permanent limp.

dont worry i know it is going to take alot of really hard work and training , and it will be a long time till i compete profesionally i will be like 20 years old , but the thing you need to remember is that all of the guys in pride , ufc , and all the other big mma shows out there didnt get there by telling them selves that they wont make evan though they heard it alot they didnt let it bother them. and for lethel weapon the gym i will be training at will be open next week but up until now we just go to his house and role around mats in his shop, so it will be a nice change to do that 2 a week and i also am joining a bjj gym in my area .

i just train boxing in CT... i wasnt looking to discourage you at all so dont take it that way... i just meant its a short term sport in that theres a TON of injuries and they add up fast.. so its always best to wait till your at your peak to get in it, but its different for everyone.... hope it all works out though...

I agree with what you are saying Nimmy but I would gladly put my well being on the line to compete in this sport. I may be dumb or stubborn but thats just the way I think. I also do acknowledge the fact I may not become a champion but I will try with every fiber of my being. My friends think I'm looney because I would compete in MMA but it's a passion of mine. Surely you have a passion? I respect your advice and opinion but I still have my goal. And don't worry I am in college right now so I'm not putting all eggs in one basket. Thanks for the advice.

Thats awesome saskfighter, try to diversify your game. I was at one time a pure wrestler, that was 3 years ago. I developed boxing and it came pretty natural to me. I am in the process of polishing my Muay Thai skills but have lots more time till then. Good luck and continue training. GSPalltheway.... don't worry man you didn't offend me. It's good to hear from another boxer such as your self.

It's amateur so it's not that big of a deal.Pretty much anyone can enter, but there are some really talented fighters around here.

They have amateur events in this area all the time like King of The Ring and Combat Sports Challenge, and you can enter as a Class A novice(They don't allow elbows or knees)and if you win 5 more fights you move up a class, and then if you win 5 more you are considered a pro.

Heres the website with the rules and events.http://www.wkausa.com/main.htm

So I'm hoping to just do the best I can,and hopefully win some fights, and go to school at the same time.So maybe later on if I'm confident and comfortable with my abilities, and have some experience and wins under my belt, and after I'm done with school then maybe I'll try some bigger shows like the KOTC(they have open calls for fighters),and maybe even higher.I don't know though if I'll be that good. It's tough to think that far ahead and not be a little frightened.

As for training,I have been wrestling since I was 10(I'm 18 now),I did some boxing as a teenager, and I've been been doing BJJ for about 3 months now.So by 2007 I'll have about 6 months of BJJ plus my wrestling which will hopefully suffice for now.For cardio I just run and jump rope.Nothing scientific or nuanced about it.There is a parkway near by(it's about 6 miles in total)and I just run it every morning.I set a goal like say 70 minutes and I try to reach it.Most importantly I stretch all the time, especially before bed.Stretching just helps you in so many ways.Flexibilty and balance are so important and overlooked. Not to mention stretching prevents injury.

thats a good point on the stretching, about 6 months ago i couldnt touch my ankle and in a previous thread i said i would like a crop cop high kick skill. tonight i was sparring with my sensei at JJ and i threw a high kick that i stopped on his shoulders, it was so funny he caught my kick on his shoulder and walked me around the dojo like a puppet, my point however, pre 6 months a go id be lucky to kick somone in the chest never mind aiming a kick right to the chin.

it seems liek there is alot of MMA events in the USA which you guys can compete or at least train in. im doing muay thai and JJ every week and in between im skipping, been asked to do boxing in a private club with 2 other guys who saifd they want to train me up ( i roll with one of them at JJ and he is a brown belt), actually he and my dad trained each other many moons ago.

im sure if u guys keep at it then you will be fine, im glad you are focused at being the best u can be however having "options" in life are very very useful and worthwhile.
