Intro - Advice?
Hey everyone,
Let me say first of all that I'm glad I found this forum, there's mountains of great info to be found about MMA! I've recently decided that I want to get in shape, and maybe try to fight in some ametuer shows in my area. The problem is that I'm 23, married and have 2 kids, so I doubt I'll be able to pay for a gym or training. So i searched the forum and didnt find much on Bas Ruttens books or DVDs. Do any of you guys have them? Are they worth the money for a guy like me, who will be training in my garage!?!? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, about the books or training or whatever.
Thanks guys,
Good to be here!

i agree that this is the best forum out there, but to the point. i recomend tito ortiz's mma dvd set it is great , you can find it on ebay . i have never seen bas ruttens dvd's but i hear only good things. but in my opinion anything is a good start like you should really think about getting a couple good tapes on bjj and get a partner to do it with . hope it helped and good luck.

have you any martial arts training?
the MMA scene has moved a long way from guys who like to fight in a bar or guys who have seen a few tapes and think they are randy couture. if your serious about it then, try out at a local kickboxing club or osmething liek that, i know they arnt expernsive where i come from but unsure of what its like over there. i pay £3 for my jiu jitsu classes a week,(~$5) and have 1 - 2 -1 tutition with several blackbelts for over 2 hours, i get to work with some great jiu jitsu artists and learn some good stuff.
not everyone starting martial arts needs to sign up for the expensive gyms, work on a style first off til your at a level where you can hold your own, or maybe even 2 styles. you might be lucky and find an MMA gym( these are rare where i stay) which is affordable.

Thanks for the advice guys,
Believe me I know how far this sport has come since guys like Tank have been in the mainstream, I also fully appreciate the level of skill and athleticism fighters have reached in todays MMA scene, which is the reason I have been inspired to pursue some kind of participation in MMA sports.
I presently have no kind of training in any sort of martial arts. I look forward to soaking up all the knowledge I can about it, whichever style I decide to go with. Thanks for the advice about finding a less expensive gym, thats got to be better than going it alone!

If I were you I would first decide how far you want to go in MMA. If you just want to get in a couple of amateur matches thats COOL!!! Then you can find a realitivly inexpensive gym and get good training in. However if you choose to fight Pro then it is a little more complicated because you have a family and all. However many champs have families but you will have to devote more money and time. Find a gym if you can and if you truly love the sport stick to it and don't give up. Good Luck.

Bas Rutten's MMA workout CDs
In the videos he says he grades potential fighters by how far they go on the DVDs/CDs
If they can go say 4 rounds on the Thai Boxing CD, then do at least half the All Around CD and half the MMA CD full blast????...
Then he'll talk to them.. If not?
Out the door!
Harder than it sounds
