Muay Thai Grading(is there any point??)
I have only been doing Muay Thai for a fairly short time and have just got my 4th Khan (blue band) . I am not a fighter and only train Muay Thai for fitness and toughening myself up a bit at the moment.
My question is, what do people think of grading in Muay Thai? Some people say it is pointless (mainly fighters),as the only way to prove skills is to fight in the ring and grading is only for Karate,Jiu Jitsu etc.
I personally think it's a good idea ,as i need motivation and encouragement that i am learning new skills. I am more than willing to fight ,when and if my instructor thinks I can.

Mike Goldberg: Big knee!
Frank Shamrock: That was a huge knee!
Mike Goldberg: That knee was big!
Stephen Quadros: Frye's getting the standing 8-Count here, Bas
Bas Rutten: Why's he getting the standing 8-Count?
Stephen Quadros: Well, he's getting his ass kicked.

im in the same boat gaz, my muay thai class doesnt really belive much in gradings, i started muay thai and JJ at the same time and have a grading for JJ In december, to be honest i dont think iv learned that much in muay thai in terms of techniques i didnt already know, i can kick harder and higher and throw some good combobs but i dont think theres nothing that i couldnt do on my own back.
dont get me wrong its a great workout and i like training with the pads and that but in comparison to JJ i find i am constantly learning there and come grading in decmeber im going to kick ass.

I believe it is a good idea although my school does not do that. I am graded by the years I attend. After three years I will be given instructor status. Its good to have ranking to know where your at.

i think ranking are good for instructors. it gives them a quick way of being able to group students of the same level together for sparring and other drills. it also gives instructors a good way of telling where students are at without having to ask questions or check records. some people also like having rankings in everything, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and can improve motivation. other people just don't care about rankings.

I'm glad you guys think the same as me on the subject, thanks for the input.
On the topic of skipping barefoot. I have started wearing trainers again,as it has caused me some serious pain in the past. Being whipped by a skipping rope on the feet hurts. It might be the soft option but if i do it a few times, it buggers up my training afterwards.

we arnt allowed to do that, i think im going to tape my toes, had muay thai last night and i really really hate skipping now because of it, i couldnt skip to save my life when i first started now im doing one legged switches, cross skipping, double feet jumps and alternate leg skips, i practise with trainers on as it doesnt really hurt as much except the whipping on my calfs and bicepts.

I guess I can see where the grading system could be a good thing even though the gym I train at doesn't do that. I think that my gym is probably a bit different than many others. There are open training times, and the Kru's know everyone that trains on a one on one basis. Also, the fighters all know each other on a one on one basis as we spend a lot of time in the ring together. It's very well suited for people that train to fight, which my gym encourages.
As far as skipping rope, I used to whack the hell out of the tips of my toes. They would look like grapes on the end of my feet! lol But I just turned that into incentive to get better at it. lol
