Default Judo in MMA

Judo is being talked about in some circles as being the next big thing in MMA since BJJ. the science of Judo is clear, use your opponents motion to put him on the canvas. Karo Parysian demonstrated this against Diego Sanchez with great success. i believe Joe Rogan was quoted as saying, "that Judo crap won't work against Diego." well it did. its obvious that Judo could be used in MMA but its taken awhile to modify it to work without and Gi. Gripping the Gi is one of the most important parts of Judo but is'nt an available option in MMA. i believe that Judo when correctly intergrated into MMA and then combined with BJJ equals incredible takedowns that can then transition directly into submissions. i see more fighters using Judo techniques to win fights.

If Rogan said it, he was quoting Diego, because Sanchez said "that Judo crap won't work on me" in his prefight interview. Yeah, he was wrong. I'll never forget seeing Diego land right on top of his head.

I believe Judo is a fairly common base skill for MMA in Japan, whereas in the US wrestling is more common and in Brazil it's BJJ.

I definitely agree with this. Karo tossed Sanchez on his head a few times, but Diego seemed to maintain position on more than one occasion. Once that transformation takes place Judo will defintely be a force in MMA, as for now Judo throws are nothing but glorified takedowns IMO.

JJ and Judo are cousins. One was developed from the other (not sure which was first). Someone took the most effective techniques from one art, did away with the ones they deemed useless in real combat, and a new art was formed. Then, the art was brought to Brazil where they further refined the art inot yet another version we know as BJJ.

your close, Judo is an off shoot of JJ. JJ was the art practiced by warriors and alot of the techniques were considered lethal in practice. Judo did away with techniques that were considered too dangerous to practice on with a partner and instead focused on techniques that were deemed safe to train in. ultimately Judo fighters became more skilled because they were able to actually train techniques against resisting opponents as opposed to training Kata or with partners that had no choice but to give you the technique. Judo is also more than just glorified takedowns. a throw excuted with the intent of dumping a guy on his head is a pretty powerful weapon. In sport Judo points are not awarded for dumping a guy on his head, throws have to end with the opponent on his back. essentially the throw is exaggerated. In MMA the goal is to finish a guy by hurting him, not by scoring Ippon.

Alot of fighters these days are adding Judo techniques to thier arsenal.Riggs had a beautiful throw on JVF and Fisher pulled one off against Stout.Nastula is fighting in Pride now and he is probably the greatest Judoka to compete yet.The Almighty Fedor has an extensive background in Judo.

I agree with you that Judo is the future. It is steadily becoming a whole new aspect to study in MMA,and it's extremely effective from the clinch.I'm glad people are starting to take notice.

It's also really exciting to watch and I hope these new guys continue to add it to thier game.

Judo is a very effective way of taking the fight to the ground. I believe that it should be integrated into every MMA system( as it is in mine.) Greco-Roman wrestling is pretty similar to judo with some different throws and techniques but to compete in either sport you could cross train the two styles and adopt techniques that fit the rules.
