Default Franklin working out video

here is Rich Franklin working out. His workout is about one hour and he goes non-stop. pretty intense.

obviously this conditions Rich to be able to perform at a high level but i don't see how his trainer sees this type of workout preparing Rich to fight for 3 or 5 rounds.

I did not check the link, but I imagine it's the same workout they showed on UFC All Access, he basically does a non-stop resistance circuit for an hour.

General strength and endurance conditioning would probably be the rationale. He does track work too I believe (another resistance workout). I would say with all of his training it's well rounded enough, although I am a new supporter of functional training.

yeah, the video is from the All-access show. i was just a little confused when his trainer was saying that since Rich can go an hour without stopping that he would be able to fight for 5 rounds no problem. my understanding of it all is that cardio and the ability of the human body to recover energy stores and remove lactic acid does'nt work like that. i think you know what i mean since you just entered the world of grappling. you're in good shape from Rugby but it was'nt enough to prepare you to enter grappling at the top of the game.

It wasn't a quick switch. I have been pretty latent in my rugby, in fact I have only gone to 1 or 2 tournaments each year rather than 40 games/year (year round). The energy expenditure rugby vs grappling is similar though, you have to go all out and rest for very short periods, involving muscular endurance, strength, cardio and recovery (think american football time 100) is a big area of concern. High work rate vs recovery periods. My training in recent years (prior to getting into grappling) concisted primarily of heavy building building and the only cardio I did was mountain biking for the most part.
So the transition to grappling was tough.

Rich's training obviously works for him, but I think conditioning your body to recover is an important part of the training needed for grappling. That is why I run in bursts, I run at 80% for 400m then walk 200m, repeat - conditioning my body to replenish glycogen, buffer lactic acid and lower my heart rate quickly between bursts.

Jeff Monson, all 240lbs. of him does intervals on a treadmill set at a 45% incline. he does them for reps. run like hell for 10 seconds and rest and repeat. before a fight he can do 20 reps with minimal rest. it mimicks his style of fighting, quick bursts of explosive action followed by a lull in action. its cardio for the cage and like you said, really pushes his recovery capabilities.

I saw a demonstration of that on intocombat.com It wasn't jeff doing the running, but some other guy he's affiliated with there (he was actually doing 50% incline too). Friggin crazy. I'd be scared just to try and get on at that kind of an incline let alone get off when I'm tired as hell

Here's the link to the video if anyone wants to see it:

(the running is in the middle of the video)

on a side note, does anyone know if that all access with rich is anywhere online? I missed that one and haven't seen it replayed

Damn, my treadmill only has a 15% incline. I usually run at a 3% grade to simulate running on a track.

i don't own a treadmill but luckily there are alot of long steep hills where i live. i imagine i could sprint up one for 10 seconds, rest and repeat. not very conveinent, even worse once it starts snowing.
