You have to learn how to punch. Yes, you can lift weights and build your body. .. Shoulders - Upper Back - Forearms - etc.. but you have to learn how to start the punch from the ground and generate the power through your body.
The best way is to take a boxing class.. OR if you can't do that get your self a mirror and do some shadow boxing. Learn your movements and repeat the technique over and over. If you have access to a Heavy Bag you can then move to it, working out the movement even more.

Interestingly enough, last night for the first time I did "The Pit" workout DVD with The ICeman's trainor John Hackleman.

He said "TO pack a good hooking punch, do double wide shoulder push ups". I never really have done double wide push ups, but he insists that hooks are made stronger because they target the top inside chest and shoulder deltoid area which are used in hook punches.

I guess you can't argue that coming from the man who's the Iceman's trainor, but I found it something interesting.

Good workout DVD. A little odd, but good.

Thats very true.. a good strong hook requires a strong Delt/Chest muscle to pull the arm in.
When I work the bag I get in close and run a good number of hook head/body shots.. works me all over.. those named above and Core for moving.

If your going to just outright slug somebody in the street, dont worry about learning to punch, technique and all that shalala stuff, you need to work on your triceps and say away from bicep training as much as possible.

Triceps extend the arm, biceps bring your arm in, so big biceps = crap punching ala the laws of physics/biology. Work insane defination training on your triceps, hypertrophy training on your biceps and between each set do at least 2 rounds on the bags.

For examples on how this pans out, watch bruce lee in enter the dragon, or read some of his weight training guides but thats basically the gist of it.

Let's see how many posts before someone tells you to do curls to build your biceps in order to punch harder.

Punching is all about technique and functional strength. It comes from your core, your hips, your legs, etc. Nearly everything but your arm, which is just the thing that your fist is attached to. All the power in a knockout punch comes from your body, and your ability to crank around with maximum velocity and torque to concentrate your momentum into your fist.
Sit said it all with that post

I don't really Do anything with my biceps besides one workout once a week that is supposed to build them straight up. I find to get harder punching (take away a trainer) is flies. I think these would work good for hooks, but someone correct me if i'm wrong. Also shoulders are supposed to help your punches. I would recommend Squats to.
