Are you talking about fighting in a sanctioned public event, or just getting into the ring / cage at a gym and fighting with one of their guys?

Take my word for it. If you have no formal training, you need a lot. If you want to be a fighter, just join a gym and start learning. Guys who take shortcuts or think they can get by just on being tough get knocked out and soon change their minds.

It's not a question of the school, it's the UFC.

They have to scout you and agree that you're good enough to be invited to fight in the UFC.

Last I heard the UFC recieves about 16000 videos annually of fighters from all over the world from every aspect and area of combat sports.

If they're lucky ,they have time to seriously review about 20 of those videos

Yeah go talk to Pat at MFS. He's down with open tryouts.

But to answer your question. No that is not a good idea.

If you are just looking to see how you would do in a fight with an MMA athlete, go into a school and see if they will let you throw down with one of their fighters. I dont see why they wouldn't.
Just because you study MMA does not mean you can beat anybody who doesn't. Let us know how it goes.

Yup he'll make you realize real quick how hard this is and you can't just waltz in thinking you can hang.

That was kind of my point though. If the question was 'I am a naturally gifted athlete in top shape' then I'd say sure give it a shot. But a couch potato? That is a death wish. Either way without any training the outcome will be similar one just might be worse than the other.

the athletic commisions are starting to get tougher when it comes to who they will let compete. its OK to have no formal training but you have to have some ability and be able to prove it through video documentation. its better still to be in with a school who can provide information on you, such as how long you have been training and what you have learned. the notion of stepping into the cage, any cage with no training is a bit silly these days. i watch alot of King of the Cage and even the guys entering thier first fights are looking pretty impressive in some cases. i have heard rumors that there are bars in IOWA that have open fight nights, where anyone can sign up to fight. you even get in to the bar for free if you sign up to fight.

Think of "Bloodsport". They don't let you fight unless you prove you know what the game is all about.

what about FightForum? pretty soon you won't be able to be a member unless you can answer a couple of MMA related questions correctly. the MMA world is a dangerous place to the uneducated.

hahaha some of the responses are too funny! fellas i'm not looking to get my ass kicked. i just want to know where a should start my training level at, and a good way to do that is to be a fight virgin. what i'm really asking is do all mma fighters start as bjj white belts and move on to 7th degree? then decide to take boxing or muay thai? it would suck to start off by "wax on, wax off..."

And I am so looking forward to it. No more "Wow! Really Sex Bomb" "Britney Spears nude" or "Buy Viagra online" ads.

starting off by being thrown in the fire is a bad idea. alot of guys have at least 9 months of training in MMA. they work BJJ, wrestling, boxing and Muay Thai all at once. very few people come into MMA with just a background in one discipline anymore. the grapplers can all strike and the strikers can all grapple. you have to know everything even if you never plan on using it. Take Chuck Liddell for example, the guy loves to stand up and strike, but he is also quite skilled in BJJ. however you're never going to see Chuck try to pull off a triangle choke. so why does he train BJJ? so he can defend and counter. Chuck uses his BJJ to avoid being submitted and get back to his feet.

We had a guy come in over the summer. He was a "streetfighter" and said he didnt want to learn traditional BJJ, he just wanted to use what he knew because he felt he was "tough and had heart".

SO our instructor called up a friend of his who's a trainer at AKA (American Kickboxing Academy) and the trainer said "Send him over".

So they did, and right away they tested him out on some mitt work.
Then some 5 minute rounds were to follow.
Then a 10 minute grappling round was to follow.
Then a 20 minute conditioning drill workout was to follow.

The guy didnt make it through 2 minutes of the mitt work.

Needless to say his "toughness and heart" were never seen in any MMA gym again. At least not in the San Jose area.

ok guys, i took your advice and watched a couple 'how-to' vids on youtube to defend against the take down. yesterday i stopped by the local MMA club, to get some info about joining. at the end of our info sesh i ask for a sparring demo and like MMA fighters they are they didn't say NO. So i get into the octagon and the instructor says "don't hold back!" at that point i knew he was going for an easy take down just to prove his point. so when he went in for the take down i SPRAWLED and followed up with KNEE to the HEAD. i effin KO'd him!
he was not impressed. but i said i was going to come back next week to sign up!:sport-smi
