We have at least one guy on here who's actively competing in muay thai. Can't remember who, though, but he posted a report and photos from his first fight.

Anyone remember who that is?

i train muay thai and it came in handy last night in my fight.... i am a wrestler with bjj training so i dont stand as often as i can... last night i fought a striker and he just kept chaging me so i started circleing left and throwing mid kicks... after landing three he gassed so i got an easy double leg take down into a super tight armbar... dont really train muay thai often but i will after last night... if i could have an idea of how a striker was coming at me i could defend it better... or so i found out last night!

I've trained with Chad Khanvongvadshong in Bangkok. Heard about him through one of my instructors who used to train with former HW kickboxing champ Dennis Alexio. One insane MT instructor.

Interesting simplistic philosophy over in Thailand on how they approach kickboxing. Kill body and the head will fall, etc. High kicks are ego driven, never throw spinning kicks unless you're auditioning for Karate Kid, etc.

Then again, he was a straight out of the woods MT guy who reminded you of Uncle Xien in Kickboxer.

Wish more like him would come stateside and open up pure traditional MT gyms. Cause it's fascinating.

Machado Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Jean Jaques, my instructor is a brown belt under him and I've been training with my instructor for about 6 years.

We also have another instructor from Chicago that trained under the former Carlson Gracie and he's an advanced BJJ guy too.

The Muay Thai thing happened by accident. My kickboxing teacher knew Dennis Alexio from way back in the 80s PKU days and I traveled to Bangkoki in the late 90s and trained for 6 months under Chad, the MT guy.

It is very different and I haven't seen yet a truly pure traditional MT gym in America. Not as an offense, but the way they do it there it's like a nationalistic thing and approach handed down generations and they're really particular about their philosophy.

American Muay Thai as I call it is a hybrid of American Kickboxing techniques handed down by the experts like Maurice Smith and Dennis Alexio mixed with some traditional Muay Thai.

It is a fascinating and I'll argue probably the most complete striking style in the world ( Muay Thai).

Well said, you see I was originally a Boxer and wrestler because that is all the training that was avilible to me at the time. I eventually found a Jiu-Jitsu place around here and loved it. I also go with my friend every so often to a school around here where the instructor there was trained under Gene Lebell. I can't afford the classes which are three days a week but the instructor is really nice and lets me roll with the guys one night a week for free. I also found a pretty good Thai school around here. I love martial arts and I love to train. What city do you train in( if you don't mind me asking, you don't have to answer.)

San Jose.

And the worst grappling partner I have (meaning he's half my size and kicks my ass all the time) is a guy from Judo Gene Lebell's school.

Good guy though.

When he's not throwing me halfway cross the planet!

How often do you practice the clinch in your Thai class? We do alot and I think it is very important aspect of Muay Thai, but unfortunatley often over looked.

We work the clinch a lot. But what I think is interesting, is most american fighters never use the elbow off the MT clinch.

In Thailand? They love the standing elbow. Off the clinch, as a fake, as a setup etc.

I wish it were used more in MMA. Standing elbows.

i have been getting so much better at counter striking... i have some confidence on my feet now so i dont mind taking a punch to get an amazing take down where i am not stuck in gaurd. not that i mind being in gaurd. i think thats where i am strongest because i spend the most time there!

If you like to ground and pound, I would suggest that you try to pass the guard. It is worth the effort if you could get Mount. Practice the clinch and dirty boxing, work your striking and press the action in striking then go for your takedowns and be relentless. Thats what I would do if I were a solid ground fighter.
