Default Heavy Bags

Rate the importance of a Heavy bag(1 being important, 5 being not important at all). Also what do you think about the weight of a Heavy Bag.

I work out every other day on a 100lb heavy bag. If you want to be 'ghetto' you can get a smaller 4 foot or 5 foot bag and raise / lower it based on punches kicks rather than throw down over 200 dollars for a 6 foot Muay Thai bag.

I would work out every day on the bag, but I lift on those days that I dont do bag drills and dont have the energy to

I would say 2, from a scale of 1 to 5. 1 being the most important. But it also depends on what you are training.

I ask this because I wanted to get a Heavy Bag but was wondering if it was worth the investment. We currently have a work out room in our basement, but no room to have a bag Hung permenatly, do they sell universal disks that you can mount to the ceiling and take the bag down and hang it up when you want?

If not a universal one, then one for a Muay Thai bag, Aika makes it sound like a good investment.

I would imagine a heavy bag is great to work on kicks as well as punches, but I have the same problem Goeth...I'm also afraid that if it was in the basement I would rock the house off the foundation with my roundhouse kicks....LOL jk

Why not use one of the bags that sit on the floor? They come in all sizes, shapes and weights. Most of them weigh around 270 lbs, fully loaded. It's a little more realistic when you hit them too. They don't swing back and forth and all over the place. An opponenent won't fly all around like a suspended heavy bag either, when you hit them. Plus, suspended heavy bags can have harmful effects on your joints as the bag impacts you as you impact it. I have a heavy bag that is suspended, but only because I've had it for 20 years or so and can't afford the other type. I guess it's better than nothing.

Personally right now I don't have much agility, or flexibility, so I don't plan on hitting the bag every time or kicking high enough. I would rather hit air then the hard plastic stand.

i love my heavy bag, and personally i feel the heavier the better. i started with a 40lb bag when i was like 13, the think would swing all over the place since i had no way to tie the bottom to the floor. i now have a 100lb. bag that is hanging in a metal stand that sits on the floor. looking back i should have gone with a floor type bag like a Wavemaster or even that B.O.B bag, the plastic man, but he's "soft". of course the heavy bag is just another tool and by itself it won't make you Vitor Belfort.

here's a website for some high end stuff, they have a really good system for hanging bags, kind of pricey though.

I've got a cheap 4 ft heavy bag. When I hang it right it's pretty decent for mid section to head height kicks. Had it just screwed into the ceiling, ripped that out. Now I moved and I'm gonna have to get a stand for it. I'm trying to get one of those speed bag heavy bag combo stands.

i have that bag stand your talking about. works pretty well, just a little bit on the bulky side. it really limits your ability to work around the bag. i got mine for $100 at Dick's sporting goods. you'll have to buy some 50lb weight plates to keep it from moving though.

i hear you there, mine is tucked away in a small bedroom, it'll be a real pain if i ever have to move it from that room. a little tip: watch out you don't strip any threads on the nuts or bolts. i had one bolt that was threaded wrong and it really pissed me off. i thought i just had it misaligned but in th end it was a faulty nut.

I got a 100 lb Heavy bag, and its about 5 ft tall, and We just ended up making our own mount for it and it works pretty dang good.

I never thought they would be as fun to mess around with then it actually is. I broke a sweat in about 5 min just punching and kicking it. Shows how out of shape I am. Thanks for all the help though.
