Do high intensity circuit training with weights to burn fat. Cardio's good, but Cardio only burns calories while you're doing it. Resistance training stimulates your metabolism up to 48 hrs later. And, if you do your Circuits with no rest between exercises and then a 1-2 minute break between circuits it almost becomes like a cardio workout anyway.

Smaching machine gave good advise. But don't be scared of a Tread mill with the resistance bumped up or an Eliptacal type machine with the resistance bumped up . Do both for 40-45 minuets . The tread mill set the speed on a 6 or more .Got to work yourself. Place it on a hilly type setting. It will build your cardio indurance up. I don't do road work anymore due to takeing stress from my knees and getting hit by the no driveing suckers in cars. Treadmill is nearly as good as a workout and in my opinion alot less stress on the knees. Yes I have had a knee injury while warming up for jogging a couple of years back. Torn meniscus. Went under the knife.Sucks... Good luck and train hard. WarDawg

Cardio only burns calories while you're doing it, unless you're working at a high enough intensity. Sprints tax your heart and muscles enough that you can work for a very short period of time (6-8 20 second sprints) and your body will still be recuperating (and burning calories) several hours later. We're talking about sprinting at 100% maximum effort, though -- your hardest possible sprint. And be warned that you have to already be in pretty good shape to do these properly.

To burn more fat on the treadmill, crank that incline up. I'm amazed by the people on either side of me at the gym who keep their incline at zero all the time. Men's Health described it as a magic button that will automatically cause you to burn more calories in your workouts.

It's the same principle as running up hills when you're outside -- hills are brutal, but they pay off.

Finally, I consider burpees the king of fat burning exercises because they're plyometric in nature and they're as exhausting as playing a really energetic game of basketball.

Burpees

yeah, interval training, like sitnspin said, is another fantastic fat burner they're a great cap off for the week. They suck at first, but the results are hard to beat. I also used to train intervals on an eliptical trainer. I'd go all out for a minute, and then barely make the thing move for a minute, and then repeated that cycle several times. Killer workout.

cardio only burns while your doing it?? not sure about that....
but like they said interval training or CRT are great ways to cut fat and limit any muscle loss you might get with simply jogging

If you want to really expend some energy find a pool. It's nearly zero impact but it will absolutely kill you. The best shape I've ever been in was when I was swimming competetively. It'll use muscles you never knew you had. I love the treadmill, the bike, and the eliptical, but to this day I still haven't found anything to beat doing 30 minutes of continous front crawl. If you've never tried swimming laps before give it a shot. The pool was the primary reason I joined a YMCA.

Yea, today I pulled something while jogging, so instead of stopping I slowed it down to about a 4mph walk on a small incline... according to the treadmill I ended up burning about the same amount of calories as my normal jog on a 0 incline.

Absolutely, because it's cardio where you're facing resistance in all directions. Can't beat that.

I would've stayed at the Y if I could justify the expense. I couldn't justify almost $500/year just to use a pool, weight room, and sauna. If I had a family I'd definitely rejoin.

If you can find a gym with a pool, join it.

I wouldn't quite put the balance at those percentages, but it's not a bad idea to look at it like that because if you really put the emphasis on diet, maybe you'll have room to slip with it a little and still be ahead.

I guess we're pretty much in agreement, though, because I'd usually say 70/30 and what's the real difference?

A good point to support what you're saying is that if you totally clean up your diet and cut your calories enough, you'll lose weight just by sitting on the couch all day playing Halo. But if you eat sugar and fat and starch in high amounts, you can work out hard every day and you'll still have a gut.

the best fat burning exercise is whatever exercise that you will do on a regular basis. i personally like the elliptical trainer, its low impact and keeps all my limbs busy. i hate treadmills, i would'nt use one if it was all i had. one key to weight loss that people often overlook is post workout eating. if you're trying to lose weight all you should eat following a hard cardio session is a whey protein shake with NO CARBS. then wait an hour before eating anything solid. alot of people assume that because the worked out for an hour they can go right to McDonald's on the way home from the gym, you can't and expect to have success.

I totally agree. I used to do eliptical machine workouts, but I like the treadmill every other day mixed in with my kickboxing days. I tend to lose the most weight though when I hit the weights. Whether it's a resistance band class to free weights to my bowflex machine, if I can get a solid 1-2 hour resistance workout in at least twice a week hitting all the muscles? I drop a lot of weight.

Yes, pure cardio only burns calories while you are doing it. It does not stimulate your muscles like weights or all out intervals do.

Yup, that's why your avid "jogger" gets all frustrated when they don't lose as much weight as they think they will from running.

I consider running fast burn. It's a good exercise to do when you need to fast burn off that large lunch you shouldnt of eaten, etc. But overall calorie burning? All day? Not the exercise of choice.
