Default Newbie Recommendations

Hi, I was wondering if maybe some of you could help me out. I want to get started in MMA... I live in Brooklyn, so I'd really like to know if there are any schools you might recommend. Or , instead, what things I should pay attention to when choosing a shool.
I guess my biggest question though, is that I am a girl... I've encountered many schools that just won't take me seriously. Most of them will at the most recommend a self defense class which is 1) not what I am looking for and 2) in any case, pretty useless.
Also, if anyone knows of upcoming events in NYC, I'd really appreaciate the info.
Thanks...

I don't know of any schools in your area or what to look for. But good luck to you. I have been very suprised to find that there is a great deal of girls that are into MMA. They should open up a league for females or something.

New York has some great BJJ schools, and don't worry about the ones that wont take you serious, I have a friend who is a green belt in mixed martial arts (KBK) and Japan has an MMA promotion starting up called SmackGirl that is all female

Hook n Shoot use women also. Personally, watching women sparr Tae Kwon Do sacre me. They f'n go at it for each others blood. I respect women a lot in Martial arts whatever its TKD, BJJ, whatever. And if somebody doesn't respect you, then they're most likeley bull headed or a lil threatened.

I would think girls would be better at wrestling then guys and be able to use more submissions just because of their strong legs.

women almost match men at lower body strength but fall way short in upper-body strength.

anyway, i would find a school or an individual who is willing to take you seriously or at least give you a shot. you may find that getting punched in the face is not what you want. i would try kickboxing or boxing if you can't find a MMA school. i know someone in Brooklyn who has been looking to get into boxing so i will ask him where that place is.

When I did TKD there were a few women in my school who I did not look forward to fighting. KOTC has had some women matches as well.
