Default Theory. Strong Legs = Strong Punching?

Had a good kickboxing class last night. Did some MT rounds, very good Mitt work, had good power both with my right and left hook as did my partner. Never under-estimate having a good partner hold the mitts the right way for you vs. a partner that sucks at holding, especially if you hit hard.

Now I'm no Mike Tyson, but I hit hard, but kick harder. I have very strong legs from my TKD/Football days. But the instructor was working a few mechanics with my partner and I and I know all about the footwork for a right left cross/hook and the pivoting etc.. What I didnt know until he worked the mechanics better on me was the fact that just a little more pivot off the lead leg with the left hook has devastating increase in power.

Then my instructor said.. Its because you have very strong legs. If you have strong legs, theoretically you should have strong punching ability if your footwork is correct with the pivoting. The power isnt all from the shoulders, its from the footwork and torso pivoting.

I think subconsciously through the Years I've known that, I just really havent paid much attention to the footwork and the added power both proper footwork and twisting does to add to your punching ability.

I love knowing I was really strong and found a new little twist to add to punching power!!!

Cool Stuff, ever have that feeling? A small little adjustment you made that you didnt think anything about as a big deal, but it made a huge difference in outcomes?

Hey Krav, I have some ok strength legs, like I have some really powerful cavs, but my thighs aren't that strong I can't squat very much, but I have extremely strong kicks. Why is this? Like when I kick my 100lb Everlast Bag; it leaves a huge dent where I kick and makes a huge, SMACK!

It's your twisting. Some really Cut into their kicks well despite them not looking like they have strong legs.

Also, LONG people have always in my experience kicked very hard because of course the leverage factor. Long people naturally have that leverage and know how to use it to their advantage.

In fact... The Hell with getting kicked by a long person. You're screwed. You can't stand toe to toe with a long person unless you're randy couture.

Hips, hips, hips. Almost all power from strikes comes from the hips. That's why it's so important to have a strong core. Proper hip rotation is the key to almost any strike.

ehh all technique... guys with huge muscles hit hard... those with good body comp and proper form hit harder... i think its the overall package and not so much one particular set of muscles...

The Hip is part of the legs and the hip is part of that Torso strength.

And... At least last night? That extra drive off the footwork was beautiful!

And Upper body, I'm big, not huge, but I have huge muscular nasty legs. I dont know where I got them, I think it was from aggresive cycling as a teenager ( I was all up in that stupid Freestyle stuff) coupled with TKD and Football.

I'm only now realizing that those simple nuiances of body mechanics when punching make all the difference between a hard striker vs. a powerful one.

But I'm not freakin dumb enough to ring Chuck LIddell's phone suddenly and say..."Hey, let's bang"..

I'm more likely perhaps this summer to go down to SLO and see if he has a few workshops that he tends to offer and refine what I've already learned.

I love learning new ****.

the ability to squat alot isnt related to punching power... thats generally a slow twitch movement... any forceful powerful fast twitch movement, muscle is going to produce a better punch... so this theory is busted as they say in mythbusters... there are many many other factors

Did you just ask MTKrav to explain to you how you're confused? Now I'm confused. Was that supposed to be two sentences?

there is a saying, "you can't fire a cannon out of a canoe." basically you can only generate as much power as you can control. yes there is alot of technique involved but strong legs and a strong core are essential to rooting yourself during powerful strikes.

all good and valid points. I agree with Crashti. I remember a book I read once, on karate drills, and it said that if you have two guys of equal skill level...the stronger guy is probably going to win out. Big difference if you can kick like a HW and the guy your fighting kicks like a MW.

i used to box and i can tell knockout power doesn't come from your arms (though it helps) it comes from your legs and really a lot from your core. by using your core you can generate a ton more power. fast twitch muscles>>>
