This forum is only a few months old, maybe 2-3 if I'm correct. It's not as easy to get things up and running as you may think. I'm at another forum that's pretty new also. We only have 100 somthing members and it's probably been open 6-8 months. If you really want more people here that bad, put a link to this forum in your signature at other forums you post at.
Oh, and welcome to the boards

I don't know where you got 19 members from, but we actually have 166. Maybe 19 users online at a time? We have 166 members in about 45 days since the site launched, that is 3 new users a day which is pretty good for a site that is 45 days old.

Honestly, if it is borring, then don't come here. You are telling me to get this forum up and running? That is just being ignorant...Go to your other forum if it is that bad.
BTW, what is the other forum you are talking about? I am willing to bet it didn't have 371 in under 3 months.

a small forum in no way translates into boring. i used to frequent a web forum about my car. when i joined there was a very small tightly knit group of guys and girls who could talk. as we speak the site has over 5000 members and its full of reposts and trolls. flaming is common place and a new post might make its way off the first page within a day without getting any replys.

I'm actually enjoying the size of our community. There seem to be a good group of regulars and we all get along well.

Yeah, not that I wouldn't want this to grow because its a great forum, but so far everyone here has shown they are mature individuals who respect all these sports. The more people you get, the more jerks sneak in.
Obviously it'll happen eventually and whatever. Im just enjoying it now and im sure Ill enjoy it later too.

What are the main problems that you have with other large forums? I want to be able to grow, but I also want to keep the same level of intelligent converstation.
This info will help in coming up with a plan for a reputation or user feedback system that will ensure that things stay under control.

I post at a forum with somewhere around 100,000 people registerd. I would say around 60,000 of the registerd names are people that have been banned over and over again. These people are mainly the trolls, the people that ruin conversations and start crap with people. They post ridiculous stuff like huge pics of something related to starwars or just stupid remarks that dont sit right.
About 30,500 other people are the people that just disagree with what everyone says and try to act like they know everything about everything. This gets real annoying real fast. They will harass someone for thinking differenty then them and they start a bunch of crap with everyone just like the trolls, so I guess we can call them trolls too.
The last 500 people are the guys that are cool. These are the people that are like the crowd we have here right now. They respect other people opinions and are cool to talk to.
That about sums it up I think, I may have left a few things out, if I did I'll post them up when I think of them
PS. If you go to the bodybuilding.com forums under the Misc. section, you will see everything I posted about, maybe even more.

Thanks for the info. We will come up with a system to hopefully prevent or limit those types of things. I am trying to come up with ideas. Maybe a system where all user can give negative feedback and when a particular users feedback drops below a certain level they are banned from posting for x amount of days or weeks even.
If that doesn't keep the quality of content up, or if banned user register using new IP addresses, we will start charging a membership fee to ensure that we attract legitimate fight fans. Don't worry, if you are registered already you are in good shape.
Just some ideas. I want to look ahead and be prepared becuase we are growing extremely fast. While we are small it is easy for me to keep up on bans of people who are just here to make life miserable for others, but I don't want it to ever get out of hand.

Not sure whether you can get it installed, but there is a so-called "Karma option", which allows each member to give feedback, i.e. a direct user rating.

I thought of something else while reading about the "karma system" Bull is talking about.
Some people at bb.com forums send negative reps(karma) if they don't agree with something you say. Not sure if there is any way to not let this happen. Maybe you can have all reps(karma) go through a moderator before they actually become active?? Just an idea, I don't know if that's that's even possible.
I am also a member at another forum, e-grounds.com and they don't even have a rep system. Everyone is equal to everyone else in other words. No one has more power than anyone else accept the moderators of course. The guys there are pretty cool and everyone seems to get along there. Maybe having no rep system is the way to go??
Just letting you guys know what my past experience has been to aid in the development of the forum.

i think that the best defense against a forum going bad is good moderators. the last site i used to frequent got crazy because for awhile there were no moderators. it was left up to a few senior members who did'nt even have access to ban users or delete posts.
another idea that has worked well at other sites is the "donating member" method. instead of charging a memebership fee you simply reward people who donate to the site in one way or another. be it money or maybe someone has some real knowledge that has been very useful. say Randy Couture joined the forum, he'd get "donating member" status simply because he can offer insight no one else can. basically "donating members" get special access that non donating members do not. donating members get to post photos or have access to a special part of the forum. maybe a section called the Locker Room. a place where the real serious "fighters" get to go. similar to the pre-fight room where all the fighters wait before they hit the ring.
