Default Whats the best fighting style for street?

I would personally think Kickboxing but i am novice at all this martialarts stuff i really started getting into it about 2months ago.

Also for street i think you would want some thing where if i guy run at you with a fist you can counter it and try to knock him out as fast as possible in a street fight and i think kickboxing would be your best bet for that.

Love these loaded questions.
For me, if I have time and only one opponent. I like to stay on my feet for fear of a blade coming out in the clinch. Avoid the initial flurry of an unexperienced fighter, take my time and box. Avoid knuckle busting power punches, lay back and do my thing.
If I am late I do have a program that has never failed. A little risky against a strong fighter but quick and quite dependable. Not really associated with any particular style.
I guess it would come closer to close unarmed military hand to hand combat. Some of the same methods I teach in the womens personal defense class.

If you have a good instructor who can apply a good street training scenario from time to time. Go out of your way to learn some stay on your feet tactics or ground skills that will allow you to get back on your feet. Yeah kick boxing has its place in a street scenario. Just not a stand alone set of skills.

Boxing, with eye pokes, front kicks to the groin, knees to the groin, throat punches, and rapist chokes.

I think Muay Thai would be the best. If I was ever knew I was going to be in a street fight sometime soon I would just practice legs kicks over and over. 3 good kicks to someones leg will take them down especially when they cannot defend and have not have their legs use to the punishment. What you mainly want to do is be quick with in and out bursts. If you brawl the guy may catch you and your out, you need to beat him technically, use your skill and you will win.

This is definitely the better option, if you have this option.

When asked, I recommend every one with out skills take a womens self defense class, even the men. This teaches some brutal effective proven methods of some"get your butt out of a jam" self defense. Make sure the instructor is a cop or ex military, some one with actual experience on the street.
Kick boxing is applicable in a street scenario. Some of the more technical martial styles are not that useful until they are mastered, some of them will just get you laughed at before you get your butt kicked. A couple months into kick boxing and you have some usable practical skills.

What! Have you ever fought in the street? Why would you immbolize yourself while at the same time tie yourself up with one opponent.

My first chose would be Systema which is rare but the most effective thing I have seen so far. My second would be Jeet Kune Do of course you have to find a good teacher. Which can be hard as there are a lot of bad Jeet Kune Do teachers around.

I like that you would state Jeet Kune Do. The Lau Kune Do fighting style is a stream lined, no nonsence, forwardly aggressive technique that focuses on brutality. Master Richard Tsim devloped this style in the mid 1960's and brought it to the U.S. in the early 70's. It is a little known techinque that includes extremly painful hand toughining. My lineage is direct to Master Tsim, I have been training for 20 years and this technique is completly effective. Check it out !

Hey guys, new here

Krav Maga is pretty nasty. It's a combat system developed by the Israeli Defense Forces designed to inflict the most amount of pain in the least amount of time possible. Lotsa groin/throat/eye/kneecap etc stuff. An added plus is that a large part of the training is done under extreme stress. They'll elevate your heart rate, disorient you, debilitate your senses, then force you to defend yourself against one or more attackers, possibly armed:sport-smi Pretty cool stuff, check out some vids on youtube.

This is true which is why I like the two styles I mentioned. They are all about exploring as many aspects of combat as you can.
One quote I have heard from a Systema instuctor:

"The greatest tool you have is that grey matter between your ears. There is no way to train for every situation. But if you can teach yourself to think under high stress situations and have a general understanding of what you can do. You will be a very formidable oponent indeed."

alot of you are answering the question as if all streetfights involve highly trained individuals. i just think back to when i was in school. there was this one guy who talked too much but supposedly he could back it up. he really had quite a reputation for being pretty tough. one day he picked a fight with a guy who had wrestled on his school's team. well, the wrestler went for a double leg and picked the guy up and dumped him, fight over. the tough guy had no clue how to land and crashed down on his head. does this mean wrestling is good? it does if the other guy is'nt aware of the possible techniques that can be employed.

You are right Crash. I just went on a tangent about Lau Kune Do there for a moment. The answer is really relative to the event. Eye poke, punch to the neck, groin kick, double knee take down with elbow to face, whatever. If it is a real life win or I am getting very hurt scenario, use a pen or a bottle, what ever you can to win.

Gang fights is what you are reffering to? I'm gonna have to bite off an rpg for this one:

"I learned long ago to attack from behind and watch my own..."

But if you are in a street fight, the only thing that should come to mind is the fastest way to take an opponent out and/or discourage him as quickly as possible. I reccomend boxing, karate and anything stand up.

a good strategy would be to use karate's deflection types of blocking to throw off an oppoent's balance and combine it with boxing's timing and counterpunches to maximize damage and end the engagementr ASAP

Wrestling is for one on one, the last thing you want to do is GROUND YOURSELF when there is possibility of you getting ganged up on.

regardless it's a group fight, so as "dishonorable" as it is, gang up on a fool, strength in numbers is a good thing.

EDIT: Keep in mind not everybody is a trained individual. Choose your battles, not the otherway around. If you see a fool who has a glimmer of fear, or its obvious he doesnt know what the hell he's doing, pounce on him first. Play some mind games. "street toughs" are all ego.
