Some groups are harsher than others. Kickboxing gyms are some of the harshest. It depends on what you want. Personally I'm there to learn not feed someone's ego, but some might like that.

Learn some Judo, throw your friend on his arse when he goes in for a strike.

Well the best way to get better when you spar is to either spar with someone at or around your skill level. Or with an experienced person who is trying to actually help you out.

Reasons:
Equal skill level: You are both inexperienced, both of you can learn what your weaknesses are, and you wont get discouraged since you stand a chance of 'winning'

Experienced
an experienced person will show restraint if they are trying to teach you things. Granted they can get harsh. A friend and I were teaching another friend how to box. the trainee has a very bad habit of keeping his guard down... whereas I would instruct him to keep his hands up while we sparred, my other friend punished him by snapping his dreadfully fast jab while asking "where are your hands??" thus instilling the habit of keeping your hands raised.

In short its good to get your ass handed to you in a sparring match so long as you at least did something. getting completely destroyed without so much as a whimper wont teach you anything

EDIT: conditioning is important. If you are serious about this stuff, start running and doing some rope skipping I'll bet the session will go differently once your prick of a friend gets gassed
