Default Kick Boxing question

hi i recently started taking some kick boxing classes and before that i was doing boxing. the question im asking now is in kicking boxing i noticed in my 1st day of sparing that my opponet was hitting me in the stomach and the head alot and when i tried to protect my self i usually let a the part open. i can handle when a kick is tossed at me but when a kick my stomach occurs i put hand down a little to protect myself leaving my head open thus open for a couple punches so wondering if anyone give me some tips on bettering my stances and how i can do better in kick boxing

i think i know your problem. your stance may be wrong. in kickboxing you cant stand like a boxer or you will get pounded with kicks all day. you must stand off square obviously not square but relativly not side on like i boxer, this allows you to use your shins and legs to block kicks before they come.

the block to a kick is reaching it before it is in full flow, i.e check the kick, this allows you the counter to come in with your right and vice versa. another way is to move with the leg and catch it, then you can sweep the standing leg.

Yup exactly right, if youve did boxing the transition to kickboxing will be a bitch just due to the fact its a totally different stance, imagine the points of and "L" left foot forward and the back foot out to the right at the back, with your body side on from your opponent, not facing him.

Also moving away from attacks instead of blocking them directly comes into play more. Depending how happy you are at your club, if your going to stick it at kickboxing you should move onto Muay Thai, as Kickboxing per say is just sport full contact karate....which in my personally opinion isnt as good as either MT or a particular karate style full on.

If you want to finally progress to easily defeat, say everybody in the UFC at the same time, you would do the god style of Wado Ryu Karate, but that is not a bias on my part or anything. ^^

Nonsense aside blocking a kick to the stomach is done with just one hand, a sweep movement from the outside, or inside guard leaving your other hand to defend your face/other body part. If your flexible and can take damage, you can also lift your knee around head height, and take the attack on your leg, which is good for a swift front kick counter.

If its thai style kickboxing you are doing you need to remember that you can put blocking methods together to block more than one strike ie, if you are doing your knee block correctly your knee should be up just above your hip with your shin turned slightly out facing , your elbow tip should be in contact with the top of your knee and your hands should still be up either side of your head. this way your covering that entire side of your body and nothing should get through. If you are defending a push kick or front kick you can either use the knee again or with one hand still in guard parry the front kick to put your opponent off balance. hope this helps.

I'm a perfect example of someone who's got lots of boxing experience finding it totally difficult to adapt to muay thai. I'm noticing progress, but damn -- so much of what I know has to be abandoned because it's counterproductive now. Kicks are killing me, and I have no power in mine. At least I'm not checking them with my hands anymore.

LOL @ checking them with the hands.

Kinda reminds me of Tank Abbot vs Pedro Rizzo. Rizzo kicked Tank so many times in the knee, Tank ended up trying to block those devastating kicks with his hand.
