BJJ: When you start from the knees, what do you go for first?
Most of the time when we roll, we start from the knees. I always feel like I don't know what I'm doing at that point, and once we're tied up I have something to work with and I can take it from there (not that I win very often). I often try to push his head down in your basic collar tie-up, but that seems more appropriate for takedowns. In this case, we're already kind of on the mat, right? Starting from this position, how many of you would just pull guard? Or if not, what are you trying to go for right off the top?

I do one of a few things. Many times I will just pull guard and work from there. Sometimes I'll try to reach in cautiously like I'm gonna start grip fighting (or wait for my opponent to do the same) and at the last moment switch to an aggressive arm drag and cut around to try and get his back. If the guys relatively new and tries to come in with his head low I'll just guillotine him. There's also a nice collar choke setup if the guy gets an underhook on you from the knees/butterfly guard, just shoot your hand over the underhook and across his chest to the opposite lapel (doesn't have to be deep), get your grip and pop it upward to make a little space right behind his neck for your other hand, make your grip on the opposite side right behind his head and crank your grip inward while you take the slack out and pull downward with the lapel grip, all while falling backward and to the side. Even if you don't sink the choke, use it as a sweep and it usually leads to a dominant position on the ground. Some judo throws work from the knees as well.

we do this we start back to back and turn, we are only allowed on our knees and not allowed to stand up, first thing i do if im fast enough is touch backs and immediatly turn to try and get the back, my sensei if im rolling with him will normally pretend to go back to back then grab my back, caught on to him that dastarly bugger! thyw always laugh at me inb my class as i drop to my back straight away, i like working off my back in class

Well that's kind of assuming that your opponent gives you the opportunity to sink the kimura. The same can be said for any submission. If the guy tries to stack me and leaves one arm in and the other out, I'm gonna triangle his face off, if he sits in my guard and extends his lead elbow out too far, I'm gonna take his arm home with me, etc etc. It's all situational.

Gonna be hard to pull a triangle off if hes adjusting for the kimora
Which keep in mind you have to do that quick, almost in 1 motion. Dont let the opponent realize your going to be grabbing his wrist. IF hes any good at all he we notice the situations thats about to occur and slip out of harms way.

What I was trying to say is that, in order to sink the Kimura, or any submission, the setup has to be there. I'm not sure what you mean in the first part of your post. I was saying that if a guy is trying to stack me to pass my guard and mistakenly leaves one arm in and the other out, the setup is there for a triangle and I'm gonna take it. If the guy posts his hand on the mat, the kimura is there. You can't just "go" for a submission if the setup isn't there, you'd be wasting your time and probably missing other opportunities to sweep or go for other submissions. Do you train BJJ?

yeah, I see what your saying but, in these classes the fighters arent as skilled as say a UFC fighter or even an IFL fighter in most cases. So most liekly they put that hand on the mat, which shoudl open up the kimora....yea i see what you're saying tho

Because I'm wide and strong, I like to shoot for a single first and either jump into a full mount or, if the guy is strong enough and pulls me into his guard, I stack him right away and bear my weight and strength down on him.
But that's just what works for me because I'm very strong, and usually after that a better BJJ guy waits until I get tired and then has his way with me usually into some sort of triangle choke.

I know this thread is old but I was wondering, once you get him in the kimora from your guard what direction are you supposed too pull too make him feel it? And i'm a BJJ noob lol, i've only been doing it for a month.

Let's say you are attacking your opponents left arm. You're grabbing his wrist with your right hand, and reaching over and grabbing your own right wrist with your left hand. Once you complete the steps of the move illustrated in the clip, you're basically pushing with your right hand towards the back of your opponents head, rotating your opponents shoulder joint. It only takes a little bit of pressure to get a tap, so go slow! Having your instructor or a higher belt apply it on you slowly may help you understand the geometry of the move. How you like BJJ so far??

I'm loving it, thanks for asking and helping. Out of all the sports i've done this has too be the funnest! Yeah, I ended up learning while I was rolling with my step-dad, he showed me the side control kimora so I ended up getting the jist of how you do it. And BTW, I love the side control kimora sooo much! B/c I always get people in side control but never know what too do from there lol.
