Your Definition of Unorthodox
I liked the thread on Technical, so I figured lets do one on what everyone thinks is Unorthodox.
To me unorthodox is somewhat of hybrid technique based on a good knowledge of traditionally approved technique that is effective for a particular fighter.
For example, The Iceman. He throws unorthdox hooks which technically aren't hooks, they're loop punches, i.e sucker punches, fools punches, etc.
Frank Shamrock IMO has unorthodox BJJ. It's not Just BJJ, it's not just wrestling, it's not just necessarily Sub-Grappling although on the surface you can tag it as such. It's sorta hybrid submission grappling JJ..
But it's effective for The Iceman and for Frank. Very effective. And those punches can do a variety of damage to the unprepared fighter who's orthodox, if he sits around long enough for Chuck to find his range.
What I'm not too good at is finding out what's unorthodox about grappling. I have a blue belt under a JJ Machado system, and am not that great on the ground, but have good enough technical knowledge to hold my own and the rank. I find grappling so fascinating however because it seems like it's ever evolving into unorthodxy with every particular fighters/coaches tweaking ground technique all the time. A counter for a counter for a counter argument, so to speak.
What do you define as "Unorthodox?"

I think unorthodox is a person using his or her own knowledge of a topic and creating a style that works for them best. Somewhat straying away from the proper techniques and adapting to their ability, size, or surroundings.

The opposite of the technical thread is unorthodox
As soon as i saw the topic, i thought of Chuck with his unusual angles, great minds think alike i suppose. I agree with Couch, to me it means not being as technical as say, a boxer but, really MMA seems unorthodox and thats where you see the most unorthodox fighters. Probably cause its diffrent techniques combined to form MMA. Is their technical fighters in MMA? Of course and we all know that, so im not saying everyone who trains MMA is unorthodox. Good thread krav...speaking of krav, have you ever trained in Krav Maga?

i consider much of MMA to be unorthodox. when you take differant fighting styles and combine them to attack and defend against other styles you make them somewhat unorthodox. you have to so that you can adapt. BJJ techniques had to be altered so that they could be applied to MMA. they're no longer textbook so they are unorthodox. Taking it one step further there is now a defined version of what an armbar should look like in MMA, as an example. so now most MMA techniques are no longer unorthodox either. Unorthodox to a straight up BBJ player of boxer maybe, but not to MMA. am i making sense or just rambling on?

My personal definition of unorthodox is simply entertainment.
Shonie Carter, Crazy Horse, Genki Sudo, Chuck Liddell...even Keith Jardine to some extent.
It can't really be defined by its effectiveness, I don't think, so it's very much open to interpretation. Basically, when somebody breaks from the norm, from typical MMA technique, their movements become unorthodox, and this can be a good or a bad thing depending on a lot of factors.
I think that, if you aren't unorthodox in some way, if you don't have a bit of uniqueness in the way you fight, then you become too predictable, and predictable is the worst thing a fighter can be.
An unorthodox fighter can enter the octagon and fight with perfect basic, practiced technique, building combos off of stiff jabs and sticking to simple wrestling defense, and in doing this very average, technically sound strategy, he can be unpredictable, simply because his opponent is waiting for him to do something crazy like a spinning heel kick.
When Shonie Carter steps in the octagon, he has an advantage. His opponent is looking for that spinning backfist. All he has to do is not throw it and his opponent wastes that concentration.

Crazy Horse... Huerta's elbows while looking at the megatron is kind of an unorthodox thing...... and GSP's flying sprawl.
