Palm thrusts vs. punches, etc.
Okay, this might be just out there, but...
Independent of the user's strength, which is capable of delivering more force, a palm thrust or a punch?
All I ever see in MMA is punches, even though I already know it's possible to deliver a crapload of force with the heel of the hand.
Same question with ridgehands, etc.

palm thrusts can be very effective when driving up on the bridge of the nose and can also be used when striking the jaw(as a hook) to create a brain stem knockout. however if u do not strike perfectly with the heal of the palm it ends up just like a slap.
these are good to use in street fights because it reduces the risk of breaking the hand on impact, which is very likely if you punch someone in the face. however in mma the gloves generally prevent this happening so punches are a better form of striking.

We use mostly palm strikes in Krav because, as previously stated, the odds of breaking your unpadded hand on someones face is greatly reduced. I know Bas Rutten has preached the palm strike while groundfighting with your opponent in your closed guard. I believe what he said was that you give yourself an extra couple inches of space to create more velocity with your strikes. Conversely, this reduced range can hurt you in a stand up war with someone else who trains enough to know how to intelligently defend.

Bas Rutten is a believer in the palm strike. He was forced to use it in Pancrase since they did'nt allow closed fists to the head during the time he competed. you can really do alot of damage. i've also read that you should used closed fists on soft targets and palm strike on hard targets like the head. it has its place but i don't see it ever becoming popular unless the rules require it.

I agree, I've received MANY "boxer's fractures" punching people in the face / head. We practice palm strikes to the head, punches to the body.

a palm strike off target can cause damage to your tendons or wrist...if the joint hyper extends......
you can not turn into a strike as far using a palm strike so you lose some hip rotation and shoulder force

I agree with your first point, but I've had soft tissue damage from a improper punch also. I disagree with the second point, as we throw our palm strikes exactly like a boxing punch. The only difference is the position of the hand. Same hip rotation and shoulder force.

Bass is right. Alot of palm strike drills in Krav that we also use. And I was amazed just how much force you get hitting a Thai Pad or a tombstone pad when you land it properly.
Now imagine that force on someones eye socket, jaw, etc.
Trouble.

Yeah I watched a couple of Bas vids from pancrase on you tube and he used the palm strikes to great effect.

also, dont no if this applies to anyone, but my muay thai instructor (who is a bit of a psycho) always says palm strikes are great because if you hit someone in the street with one it just looks like you slapped him on cctv lol

We were told that it looks good for us on the door because they can be used from the "fence" or your passive conversational stance, I also like the throat strike for that purpose a quick sharp shot can create some good distance and make an attacker think twice, it also just looks like a shove on camera.
