Default Any Ideas on how to get out of a crucifix hold in BJJ?

This morning while training one of our brown belts got me in a crucifix hold. My arms were extended on both sides and I could not get to my hips to even try to wiggle out. He extended his body and was putting a lot of tension and force on my shoulders. He said that it was almost impossible to get out of something like that. His response to getting out of it was not getting into it. Any ideas?

i almost replied with the same advice your training partner gave you. "don't get caught". I still remember Paul Herrera getting caught in that position by Gary Goodridge and those nasty KO elbows that crashed down on the side of that poor guys head. Of course Gary had that position chest up and maybe a skilled BJJ guy could have immediately countered.
