It was a bit of a Pyhrric victory for Gracie. Even though he did eventually armbar Kimo, he was so thoroughly worn out that he faked a leg injury and declined to fight in the next round. It was Kimo's fight to lose and lose he did because he had that ridiculous topknot going into the fight. I don't think Gracie had ever had an opponent that strong or completely psychotic like Kimo was that night and once he wa on his back you could see a look of fear and panic as he immediately grabbed Kimo's hair and didn't try to execute anything for the next five minutes. Kimo also nearly got away from him a few times and each time you could see Gracie panic a little.
Oddly enough (my apologies to the OP for taking this off topic) at an event only shortly after this one, another grappler vs striker match was highly promoted. This time a former heavyweight boxing champ versus a long haired BJJ guy. The BJJ guy came in with his hair in ponytail and soon found himself in trouble as the boxer grabbed his hair and used it to hold him down while delivering several crushing blows. Some people never learn.
