Had he shaved off that topknot prerfight, he would have GnP'ed Gracie into a pulp.
Even so, Kimo wore out Gracie so bad that he feigned injury and failed to answer the call for the next fight.
Kimo did lose though, right?

Royce comes to where I live twice a year for seminars and promotions. He is now initiating self defense into all of his bjj class and as a requirement for belt promotion. You have to be effective with both bjj and Self Defense. It looks life he is trying different areas of overall martial arts in real like situations, using weapons and what not.

It was a bit of a Pyhrric victory for Gracie. Even though he did eventually armbar Kimo, he was so thoroughly worn out that he faked a leg injury and declined to fight in the next round. It was Kimo's fight to lose and lose he did because he had that ridiculous topknot going into the fight. I don't think Gracie had ever had an opponent that strong or completely psychotic like Kimo was that night and once he wa on his back you could see a look of fear and panic as he immediately grabbed Kimo's hair and didn't try to execute anything for the next five minutes. Kimo also nearly got away from him a few times and each time you could see Gracie panic a little.
Oddly enough (my apologies to the OP for taking this off topic) at an event only shortly after this one, another grappler vs striker match was highly promoted. This time a former heavyweight boxing champ versus a long haired BJJ guy. The BJJ guy came in with his hair in ponytail and soon found himself in trouble as the boxer grabbed his hair and used it to hold him down while delivering several crushing blows. Some people never learn.

Traditional BJJ requires a Gi. It is not necessarily a disadvantage, as it keeps your opponent from slipping out of your holds due to sweat and blood. There are also numerous throws, chokes, sweeps etc using the Gi (that can also be applied using jackets, shirts, etc.)

I require my guys to wear a Gi or at least street clothes to simulate real world street fights. And before someone mentions “taking the shirt off” before fighting, BAD MISTAKE! Cover your head if you want to in a fight LOL!
