Default Side kick and Exe kick in MMA

I love those two kicks. Now I am training with my friend in MMA gym. He told me right away knowing my TKD back round not to throw those kicks. He scared me enough not to do it. I still practise those kicks though. I am wondering, if there is an instance that they can be useful. Have anyone use them successfully in MMA fight?

GSP has used the sidekick before and the axe kick can be useful when someones laying down in front of you with their guard up.

I would say use them when you are fighting a primarily stand-up fighter, and even then it is risky. Cro Cop though an axe kick against Kongo standing up.

ive never seen an axe kick used successfully in mma, but the side kick has been used a bit

what was your friends logic behind telling you not to use them?

Ive only ever seen Crocop uses Axe's predominantely becoz of his Kickboxing background , and i cant even remember the last time it actually worked for him! lol , side kicks ive seen GSP successfully use them , side kicks get used alot in Karate , and GSP is Shotokan Karate Black Belt , i think they can be usual , in certain situations! , but it requires alot of speed! , usually MMA fighters can jump out of the way before one of those hits!

Those kicks are risky since you really have to catch your opponent off guard to land them successfully. In the smaller promotions you see fighters land all sorts of unusual strikes successfully due mostly to the lack of experience by one or even both the competitiors. However that does'nt mean they are useless at the top level. Its just a matter of setting them up and knowing when and when not to attempt them. Since you already know them its entirely possible to work them into your set ups. If you did'nt already know them i would tell you to spend your time on other skills that have a higher chance of success.
