i was tought when in someones guard to do this combo to open them up and see what you can hit or maybe get them to give up an arm leg or better position.
L hook to the head not full force then R hook to the body full force then L hook to the body full force the R hook to th head not full force and then cycle back.... the idea by not hitting them in th head as hard as when you hit them in the body is to get the to drop there arms and cover there body so you can get a clean hit or to weaken them for later on in the fight. also i notice a lot of times when i punch someone in the body with a good shot in guard their knee pops up to there chest to protect them giving me a chance to pass guard or to fall back into a knee bar.

I like to stack in someone's guard and come down with looper punches or elbows. It nullifies a lot of the guys in our class who are good submission guys who might not be as strong as me physically.
That's just what works for me though.

training GnP can be alot like training in stand-up. if you don't have a partner or group to work with set a big heavy bag on the ground and treat it like a live opponent. it won't fight back but it will allow your body to learn to develope force in the unusual angles found in GnP. as you've probably noticed its alot harder to generate alot of power striking on the ground. if you do have a friend who is willing to train GnP with you pad them up and lay em down. you can work mount and sidemount along with the guard position and transitions. its will allow you to learn to strike a moving target from an unstable position. during a successful GnP you best friends are gravity, your bodyweight and the distance your strikes can travel. alot of times during gnp you can create alof of distance to get power. Bas Rutten suggests palm strikes in this example. it gives you an extra few inches to get speed going. you could also practice elbows off missed punches. say you throw a right hand and your partner moves his head to the right and your fist is heading for the matt on the left side of his head, GREAT opportunity to land and elbow. again, its all about practice.

thanks crash.. i do have a heavy bag to put on the ground and have started there... it is awkward for me at first, especially with generating power like you said... so far i definently prefer the elbows over punches

i agree elbows are better in most positions. they allow you to keep a lower center of gravity so you can maintain control and not get swept or bucked off. if you watch a GNP by Fedor he really brings his hands far back to initiate a strike. he gets tons of power from a position that does'nt allow you to use your legs and hips to generate power, yet he maintains a very solid base. i read once that Fedor and the Red Devil Team refer to being in someone's guard as being in "the punching position". don't forget that the HAMMER FIST is a great tool for use on the ground. its not a KO strike but it can do alot of damage over a bout.

I wonder while stacked against a cage as the standing fighter if Hammerfists down are allowed in MMA.
Because NOBODY uses them!
Either they're afraid (meaning dont wanna hurt the other guy) which is my guess, or hammerfists are illegal.....
I doubt they are because Frank Shamrock used it on Tito in 99.
I think Hammerfists arent used because most either dont know to use it or are too afraid too...........I mean a lot of MMA clubs are close to San Francisco

its because everyone is conditioned to attack with the knuckle portion of thier fist. its hard enough to convince someone that a palm strike can do damage yet alone hammerfists. i have a book called "Savage Strikes" by Mark Hatmaker and it has some very useful variations and opinions regarding striking. having only skimmed it i have already added a number of new weapons to my arsenal. good book.

I don't have a partner to train mma with so i just lay down the puncing bag and work straight shots, hooks, and elbows from the mount, knee on stomach, and side control....i even tried to hook the bag up like in the guard lol.....not very good idea for that. but working the strikes on the ground will help build up power
