the Jab
the jab has to be the underrated punch in all of MMA. its not powerful in most cases but its a good defensive strike as well as offering offensive potentional when used with other combinations. Tim Sylvia has a good jab and his reach allows him to use it to inflict significant damage over a long fight. Jeff Monson's swollen face is proof of it. i use the jab alot when i spar. i like to throw it as often as possible even if all it does is annoy my sparring partner. if you're lazy it does leave you open for attack but if you're throwing a lazy jab you in trouble anyway. what does everyone think of the jab? a good punch or are we better served by just throwing big right hands and brutal hooking punches?

yes its strange man when i first started fighting i didnt know how to use the jab untilone time the guy i was trainign with me said stop and touch my face with your first, i realised that when i did this and he tried i had at leat4 inches on him, ever since then iv kept him away with the straight jab which sets up the harder punches but for me cuts out his attacks better

it is great for keeping the distance. my friend that i box with is alot shorter than i am but i am 10 years older and a heck of alot slower. for awhile he was just overwhelming me Tank Abbott style but now i almost just post my arm out. i have such a reach advantage on him he can't even hit me. it was pretty funny the first time i pulled it off, i actually just put my glove on his forehead and watched him swing like crazy. it only worked once since now he just moves inside or around the side.

i find when i am traing that the jab can set up a nice leg kick also, jabbing twice then shifting the hips for a right low kick works for me

we don't do kicking yet, just the boxing for now but man, i cannot wait until i can use that jab to set up everything else. too bad we are so amatuer, we're still sparring in the back yard on the frozen grass.

nah, i sort of shun the martial arts. almost signed up for TKD once but i did'nt want to take the time to advance far enough to join in on the fight nights. i agree that its not easy to find people to fight. the guy i train with now is a total novice but he has the mentality a fighter needs. more so than i do in fact. i think we might have a few more folks joining the game soon which will be great.

I love the jab except of course when a guy I'm sparring with has a much longer reach. Then it's a pain. But, I have a pretty good stiff quick jab and I can double up on a taller oppoenent with it to set up my go to move which is my leg kicks.
I love jabs, and I agree it's an un-appreciated aspect of boxing/kickboxing. Sets a lot of things up and I think it's overlooked because it's not really something you're gonna knock someone out with.
Best jab of all time IMO? Michael Moorer (the ex heavyweight boxing champ from the early 90's.) That fool could throw a triple jab with power and throw people off. Crazy jab power.

why do so many cops get into MMA? is it that they learn the principles in cop training , that they can use the techniques int he street against some drug dealers or is it that they have the fighter mentality? u seem to know alot about fighting. your experiences and advice are intriging at times.

i think about that stuff as well but he really makes up for his lack of skill with intensity. he really likes fighting and is'nt scared at all to get hit and i outweigh him by 40lbs and am 4 inches taller than him.

I try to time my jab when my opponent attacks me, this throws him off balance making his offensive practically useless.

No. before I was a cop (1993), I had a TKD 2nd dan black belt and was a 2 time USTU TKD U.S. Gold medalist.
In 97 I got in to the UFC... To be honest, I thought the UFC was a lunatic street fighting farse in the first few Gracie Jiu Jitsu advertisements which were the first few UFCs.
Cops get in to MMA (IMO) Although I've been off the streets since 2002, because.....
Our force continums don't allow for fighting! We have to follow Dept of Justice Approved force continum's. And that's currently an off-shoot (at least as of 2006) of Japanese Aikido.
In other words. no kicks, no kimura's......Just control enough to effect an arrest
Now, that doesent go in to what happens in "Life Threatening" sistuations that many officers can and do get in to.. In those cases, then everything is off the table.
But just FYI... The General Public doesent realize that cops just arent at liberty to just go off and fight all the time. we have to follow what our current approved training is... And usually it's some DOJ watered down hand to hand crap...
(But I'm MTKrav) for a reason. The Israeli's have it right and my particular dept has their head screwed on straight by using the Krav Maga stuff because it encorporates MMA and grappling holds mixed with very realistic weapons defenses.

I am going to college for Criminal Justice... Which I don't understand why I have to take Biology and English but who knows. It's a pretty interesting job from what I hear, good luck The Nothing.

Yeah, the elective courses like Bio etc are crap. IMO just a rackett so that colleges can make money. If all they did was teach the required core courses for whatever degree you're getting, theyd be broke. Tough it out though, a C.J. degree will make it easier for you to advance quicker through whatever dept ranks.
