Default HeadKicks

Which head kicks do you think are worth training for and using in MMA? In the UFC, who do you think is the best head kicker?

I find the roundhouse awkward to do, I don't know why. Any tips?

I was always taught that Headkicks are ego driven. They rarely land the way they're supposed to and you open yourself way too much up for a devastating take down. There are maybe a handful in the MMA world (not talking K1 or anything) but MMA who can accurately throw a head kick. Cro COp, The Iceman to name just the top tier guys who could throw a good head kick.

It also does more damage to chop with kicks to the knee and mid-section. I've seen way more damage done with MMA guys kicking to the knee/thigh and to the body than with head-kicking.

MT fighters almost never head kick. They hate it and consider it flashy. They'd rather rip 5 or 6 devastating roundhouses to your legs or body in succession (and they do) rather than a bunch of flashy head kicks that may or may not hurt your opponent.

i attend MT aswell and although my instructor does not recommend them in a fight, he says if you throw and miss your getting hit hard, they are also hard to land. we still learn unusual kicks suck as axe kicks and spinning reverse hell kicks to the head, flashy ansd dont often work but still pretty cool to practise. that was one of my top ambitions when entering martial arts to learn how to highkick.

I agree with all of the negative points brought up against head kicking. But if somebody's open for something, you have to capitalize on that opportunity, and I just don't feel right not having any high kicks in my arsenal, particularly the roundhouse as it's really the only one that's been proven to work much in MMA.

if you have the desire to learn them, high kicks are certainly a weapon that can be used in any fight. its just that it is'nt a high percentage attack. CroCop is one exception to the rule, he has such a quick high kick that it works on almost everyone even when they know its going to be coming. he is the exception and not the rule. of course when you have a reputation for having good head kicks you never have to throw them but your opponents will still have to be ready to defend them which creates openings all by itself.

due to my lack of flexibility and fact about how low % high kicks can be done, i decide not even to bother with them.... however its an individual decision based on your skill sets... i prefer easy to land power combos between punches and kickspersonally

Oh totally. But for some reason it seems like every now and then a fighter will throw one just to throw one which I hate.

With that said, sometimes in the gym some of us regress back to the 80's when we were all kids and EVERYBODY WAS VAN DAMME FIGHTING/TKD FIGHTING and we spar by doing nothing but throwing head high kicks, tornado kicks etc.

Just for fun. Good workout too!

nothing like throwing a spinning 520 degree hurricane kick to the ear....

i get to about 122 degrees then i hear a tear, then i wake up with sleavers dripping out of my mouth onto the mat and a rodeo in my head. i wish i had the power of the van damme multishot kick, same kick slow motion in 8 different angles, would make landing it more easy

Oh God Nimmy you're gonna make me do it arent you?

I can do all those "Crazy Angle Kicks" cause it wasnt the kick!!

It was the Camera Crazy angle!

I was on the 1992 US. TKD Team (the year it was an experimental Olympic Sport ) etc.....That was long ago, and they didnt care about TKD being effective, we basically went on PPV Triple-Casts as the freakin freak show interval Carnival Entertainment between real olympic events!!!1 We did set up triple board in mid air kicks where all the boards denied the forces of gravity and as long as our foot got close, the board broke etc.

Ask Ernie Reyes Jr who wasnt on the 1992 team about that! Now look at ER Jr. ( For those old enough to remeber, he's the kid on that show SideKicks and a Ninja Turtle).

There is no 520 degree angle kick. There's just a kick simply done that some dude freakin shot from a 520 angle.

i have landed 2 head kicks in sparring... one took the guy off his feet instantly... the other knock him off balance and i was able to capitalize... the few other i threw and didnt hit with were close enough to get the person to back off and keep looking for it.... i set it up with using L jab R Cross R leg/body kick once they start expecting it i find it easy to throw one to the head and land... or almost land... if it misses and i dont get KO then i go back to the leg kick because they will be looking for the headkick first.

I can only throw high kicsk with my right leg.........If its leading.

Hard to throw them and not sweep my self off my own feet any other way.

They are good kicks every time one lands good it pretty much rocks the guy so if its there and you know your range then throw the thang !!

If you miss it just follow through and hit the ground and roll them into a knee bar :P
