Default How to get out of gi-choke

Hi,

I know this is a question that I should be asking my sensei, but I missed my last weeks judo class where they went over some chokes. Today we were doing practice judo matches. I was ahead on points and was about to get side control when he got a gi-choke on me. I forget the japanese name but its like when he takes the collar of my gi and uses it to choke me. I was wondering if any of you could tell me the basics of how to get out of that.

Reason I'm asking on here is that I have to miss next weeks class and then we have spring break so it will be 3 weeks until I can ask my sensei. If its too hard to explain on here I guess I'll just wait.

Once Bas Rutten said the best way to get out of a gi choke is to not wear a gi.

Unless you think you're gonna walk on the streeet around wearing one.

Dig your chin into your chest so the Gi lapel tightens around your chin and not your throat and turn your head slightly to create a little space. It will hurt but you will not go sleep and he'll get tired in about 15 seconds and let you go. If not 'TAP'... taping usually gets me out of a GI Choke.

One thing to add. We was taught this in our last class. Do what was already mentioned and if your able place your hands on his elbows ( early in the choke ) and push in to bring his elbows together. This takes ALOT of his power out of the choke. Now if he gets to much space between his elbows it will be next to impossible to squeeze his elbows back together. This was taught during a siccors sytle Gi choke. We all tried it and it does work if condition are right. Just like anything else. If applied to late ... Tap..... LOL.. WarDawg

Or if you can, morph into a serpent and slither out of your gi and away.

A real simple one in Judo is to grab the uppel lapel of your own gi, this way the two lapels can't cross your neck and therefore choke ya, yay
