Default The Spinning Backfist/Hammerfist

What do you guys think of this technique?

A lot of its bad rep I think comes from Shonie Carter...as much as he's become famous for it, I would say he's one of the worst at actually performing it. It must be embarassing for him to see how easily Joe Roagan saw his telegraphing.

That's seems to be the biggest problem with the spinning backfist other than making you dizzy, which some people seem to suffer from. There's no telegraphing if you work it into a combo and it's much more effective.

This move is mocked by some, but it's very lethal. In fact, I think it's against the rules in most kickboxing/Muay Thai competitions.

Do any of you guys practice this move and would you use it in a fight/MMA match?

I don't think the spinning backfist is very practicle. It seems like one of those cheezy TKD shows you see where they're spinning 5 times just to kick.

Then again, I've never tried using it. So, I dunno.

Henderson landed a pretty sweet one on Wanderlei the other night, rocked him pretty good too.

I'll use a spinning back fist when I've missed a round house and have exposed my back. (that happens with the Muy thai style of kick when I miss) I'll use the spinning back fist to protect myself when 'turning back around/squareing back up'. I only use it when I've messed up a kick and put myself in a bad spot. I'll also use a side kick instead of a push kick every once in while...(Only with a tall guy when my legs are really tired and I can't get my push kick up high enough) it does not hurt them, just pushes them back and give me 2 seconds to regain my composure. My training partners do make fun of me when I do that...(WOW Danniel son... your kung fu kick is so... how do you say "gay?') My Muy Thai still needs alot of work.

Exactly... I get beat up just like Daniel-san on Karate Kid, all the time, by guys half my age, and then they laugh me.
But Hey... it gives my training partner something to laugh at. That kind of stuff keeps me humble in the Dojo.

It is very easy for me to forget to check my ego at the door. Having the guys clown me on the technique helps keep me the right size and most importantly, teachable.

i say the spinning back elbow is most practical. I guess thats cause I train in Muay Thai though. If you go for the fist you are leaving yourself way to open for an attack. On the otherhand if you can land it more power to ya.

Is that legal in UFC? I can't see any rule against it, really, but I would have to assume it is illegal because nobody has ever went for it and it is a very deadly move.
