What style should I learn
ok so i know this question is hard to answer, but my girl and i are looking to start training again.
we both have 1 year of kung fu training (for exercise)
first off: i am not trying to become a pro fighter, just want to learn some self defense and lose some weight and have her learn some self defense stuff.
here are the top styles we had talked about.
BJJ, good for the smaller guy (she's only 5'1") after watching TUF and other mma stuff. after the guys are done rolling or fighting on the ground they are exhausted and covered in sweat (good for losing weight)
Krav Maga, get in and get out quick... someone attacks my girl and she will be able to kick them in the balls or what ever. then get out quick.
went to a local Krav Maga school and watched a class and that looked like a crazy workout. (good for losing weight)
oh and marc laimon's gym cobra kai. BJJ: see above, but add in MMA classes. they have mma skill classes to learn more of a MMA style.
then i was thinking about just joining a kick boxing gym. one of them tae bo type places. this would not be good for self defense but great for exercise.
what do you guys think.
again this will be for self defense and exercise. not really for either of us to become pro fighters.

If you're really just looking for fitness and self-defense, I think I might be inclined to vote for Krav Maga. They'll whip your ass with conditioning drills, and they're all about the Bas Rutten mindset when it comes to self defense. Kick to the balls, thumb in the eyes, knee to the nose, and that's one effed-up mugger.
But BJJ is still totally fun and an amazing workout. I don't do it regularly, but when I've trained with BJJ teams I've sweat buckets and been sore for days.

Krav Maga is very hardcore, you will be ragdolled at least once or twice

I'm a BJJ player, but started taking kick boxing classes last year to mix things up. I thought it would be a lot easier than rolling around on the mat, but was suprised to find out just how much more of a workout I get from it. I always sweat a river and leave there with my arms and legs feeling limp and heavy because of the amount of kicks and punches I have to put out...

MTKrav said that krav maga would be a great workout and that sounds good to me.
i also like that they teach ball kicks and **** like that. my girl is tiny and her job deals with drunk asses, they have bouncers and security, but i would like for her to know what to do until security can get there.
i might talk to the Krav Maga teacher (for lack of better word) and see if we can get a couple free lessons. when we joined the kung fu place we told them we were on the fence about which place to join so they gave us one month free (4 lessons and daily group classes) lets see what the krav maga guy can do

I always maintain that any fight gym worth its salt will offer at least one class free to let people test them out. Any place that demands your money up front has to be insecure about new members wanting to back out.

What I like about the Krav system also is that it puts you through stress drills. They're big on messing your heartrate and respirations up through conditioning drills to simulate a street attack. Then you get used to quick forward attacks and striking.
It really is a very bare bones MMA system. Some boxing, kickboxing, real basic BJJ (working in the guard, basic submissions etc) . But in Vegas, what's neat is that you have a diverse set of gyms you can go to. Just pick one that you feel is right for you and your girl and that you have fun with.
Keep in mind also that Krav Maga is not a martial art. It's a self defense system that the Israeli military developed. In other words, there are no katas, numbered moves etc. They simply mix basic priniciples of boxing, kickboxing and ground fighting to fit various likely street type encounters.

I'd suggest Judo. I did it for a while and loved it. Throw the mofo and get the hell out of there!

Muay Thai, the answer is always Muay Thai. By the way I just fought someone in a smoker that knew savate, ha that style is pathetic.
