It seems to me like "forcing" someone to fight would eliminate a lot of technique... and technique is the reason I like kickboxing and MMA so much. It's fun to try to figure out what each fighter is thinking. I've been watching WCL for a couple weeks and it also seems to me like a couple guys throwing everything they can think of just to score points. It's not usually pretty and it has a sort of "brawl" aspect rather than the "outhinking" aspect of MMA and kickboxing.

That said, I do still enjoy watching WCL, I'll just never like it as much as UFC or WEC or K1.

All combat sports are about points. At least, in the UFC and PRIDE they both have a points system. In the UFC, they call it a ten-point must system. In the WCL, they call it a five-point must system. But, they are not throwing indiviual techniques hoping for a point here and a point there for a weak kick or a weak punch hoping that they can run away and not get hit.

And, these are not some nobody FCF fighters from some nobody gyms. Listen to the stats on some of these guys. Wonderboy Thompson is like 54-0 in (I think) the WAKO. So far, in the WCL, nobody has lasted three minutes with him and returned in the second round. He keeps KO'ing his opponents. I have to say, this guy's MA skill impresses me. His strikes are very accurate and they have power, real power, behond them.

But, Wonderboy is not alone. I have seen Muay Thai guys and even a few MMA guys fighting in the WCL. Guy Mezger coaches one of the teams, and he was a MMA champion and a kickboxing champion.

I think that forcing the fight eliminates the useless or weaker techniques that are not really practical. The fighters are forced to thin and think fast. Some do well, some do not. Going full-tilt for three minutes is NOT easy.

And, we agree on the MMA versus kickboxing issue. The WCL is not nearly as interesting as the WEC or the UFC or KOTC or the IFL. But, K-1 Kickboxing has not been exciting for me in quite some time.

Because you havent been watching K-1 MAX. Albert Kraus, Mike Zambidis, Masato, Burkaw.Por.Paramuk, Tatsuji, Sato, Kohi, Andy Souwer.. heck, even Kaoklai Kaennorsing has cut weight and fought there. MAX is where all of the good fighters are anymore, not on 4 or 5 year old ESPN2 K-1 shows

That's true. It's a shame that ESPN2 runs those older shows. I used to have an HD station that showed the newer K-1 GPs (newer meaning only two or three years old). They showed the GP event that also had the BJ Penn verus Renzo Gracie MMA match attached back in 2005.
K-1 WORLD GP 2005 in Hawaii Fight Card

- BJ Penn vs. Renzo Gracie (MMA rules)
- Akebono vs. Hong-Man Choi (K-1 rules)
- Musashi vs. Rickard Nordstrand (K-1 rules)
- Allan Goes vs. Lyle Nicely (MMA rules)
- Brandon Wolf vs. Riki Fukuda (MMA rules)
- Steven Okano vs. Michihisa Asano (MMA rules)

K-1 tournament bouts:
- Scott Junk vs. Yusuke Fujimoto
- Butterbean vs. Marcus "XL" Royster
- Carter Williams vs. Nobu Hayashi
- Wesley "Cabbage" Correia vs. Gary "Big Daddy" Goodridge
- Dustin Haning vs. Mike Malone (reserve fight)
The only fight that I liked on that entire card was the Penn-Gracie match. And, look at the kickboxers. Butterbean? Cabbage? That surprised me that either of them would be in a tournament for a world GP. Carter Williams and Goodridge I could understand, even if I'm not fans of them.

Yeah, I'm lucky I got it for free. I really only watched it for BJ Penn and Renzo Gracie. I watched the rest just for laughs. I still could not understand why Butterbean was doing kickboxing. But, then I don't understand why he tried to do MMA either, LOL. There was more than one huge fat guy on that K-1 card.

It was on the IDHD channel up in the 700s on my cable. There were two channels: IDHD1 and IDHD2. They showed a few of the non-Japanese K-1s as well as a lot of soccer and music specials and such. The channels are gone from my cable now for some reason. It happens. The HD channels get updated and tweaked a lot. Something called Universal HD appeared in their place, LOL. So, I don't know what my cable company is doing with HD anymore.
