Dream pulled from Primetime TV
Jordan Breen broke the news that the Dream promotion lost their primetime TV spot on TBS in Japan. He has a great writeup regarding the short term and long term ramifications of this decision that I highly suggest reading.
Quote:
In a less-than-dreamy scenario, Fight Entertainment Group's Dream MMA brand has been ousted from primetime television on the Tokyo Broadcasting System.
The change comes after the debut edition of Dream garnered lackluster ratings in a make-or-break scenario for FEG and TBS.

I'm sure Zach Arnold will have a lot to say about this decision tomorrow.

HDnet might pick it up for broadcast in the US. That's been rumored for a while. But revenue wise, that's peanuts compared to what the Tokyo Broadcasting System would pay them for a primetime show.

This really sucks. A one week delay with heavy editing. I wonder how hard it will be to get a good viewing in the US.

The next Dream will suck with the editing. But once they go SkyPerfect PPV, it will likely work out even better for US viewers as we'll get the whole show, via HDnet or other methods.
Its more the long term financial health of the promotion that has me somewhat worried.

I hear ya. Pride revisited. I would almost guarantee that this is a result of incorporating former Pride employees into their(K-1 heroes) fold.

This was pretty much expected as HEROs got pretty low ratings on TBS as well. This event would have had some very low ratings as Akiyama is out of the event with a broken nose.. There is always a chance for them to jump to Fuji, where K-1 WGP is aired in the future.

Do you really think Fuji will take them with all the Pride folk?

Arnold has a vendetta against most MMA in general. He views everything from the pro wrestling angle. He simply has more contacts in Japan than the average MMA journalist from his time as a pro wrestling journalist and thus has a lots of ways of getting the behind the scenes stuff such as who is actually in charge of FEG.

They have aired K-1 WGP for many years. It has less to do with former PRIDE staff than it does with low ratings started during the later HEROs events, and a continuation of this trend with the first DREAM event. TBS was very close to dropping HEROs last year due to ratings. They put on good fights from time to time but the matchmaking is generally convoluted and there was no continuity between events, no rivalrys, heck, alot of the time you saw a core group of 5 or 6 guys fighting and then other unknowns/former puroresu stars coming in. DREAM didn't have time to grow really.
And historically, Bushido events usually didn't pull much as compared to the regular PRIDE events. Maybe Japan, even with its deluge of talented lighter weight fighters, really likes the big guys more?

i would say that is not questionable. As sad as it is i think it has to do with its lack of talent in the heavier weight classes that makes them so appealing. The love for freak matches i think is even an extension of that as well. Japen sure did love Andre the Gaint and Hulk Hogan too... I believe it has less to do with their ability or how the wwf marketed them but seer fact that they were gaint men. You have some gaint men coming out of Japen and all other countries as well but i think because of the USA's ****ed up water and passible standards for it, over whleming amount or crap in or meat products, and obession with being famous we tend to produce a lot of bigger men in sports. Any person over 6'3 gets asked if they play baskettball... anyone with a wide frame should play football.
