TCC, nice gifs, but no flying axe handles? ;)

Well, I hate to link you to that most horrid of places, but here is the only place I could find it. My brain too small to figure out how to get it from there to here.

Top pg 4.

Did anyone else catch the double flying axe handles in the Zaromskis/Ikemoto fight? Hilarious. Anyone have a gif of that?

I've always felt Kharitonov was overrated

Really? TBH I'd say around 70% of MMA fans dont even know who he is!

Admittedly he hasnt looked overly impressive in the last few years, although I think that's mainly down to numerous injuries, including in both shoulders (not saying in anyway that thats the reason for his loss to Monson btw). But you can't deny he's had some real solid wins over the years, not to mention some awesome fights. Look at some of his career highlights:

- Got to the semi-finals of the 2004 HW GP and only got beaten by a razor-close decision to Nog (which was his first loss). Nog went on to say in a Fighters Only interview that Sergei had the best boxing he'd seen in MMA.

- He absolutely destroyed Schilt, Rizzo and Choi Mu Bae (not a great name but he recently beat Peewee Herman who a lot of people had hyped up)

- Has a victory over Werdum. Wasnt the most impressive fight but he was injury-riddled for it and still won.

- Lost to Overeem due to dislocating his shoulder when taken down, didnt tap and took a beating until the ref stopped it. Avenged it the next year when he KO'd Overeem in the first round and actually had Overeem turning and running from him. Also the last person to beat Overeem in MMA since his recent streak.

- He's the sole person to beat Mike Russow.

Even in his loss to Aleks, he was winning the fight until he got cocky and threw it away for himself. Plus losing by sub to Monson is nothing to be ashamed of imo. If anything it's testament to Monson's talent, rather than Kharitonov's lack of.

Like I said, no doubt he hasnt looked the same for the last few years and definitely shouldnt be ranked in the top 10 but imo his resume is still more impressive than a lot of today's contenders such as Rothwell, Kongo or Dos Santos. And with regards to being overrated....from around 2004-2006, who was unranked or ranked lower than Sergei that should have been above him?

(sorry for the long winded post but you had to know Id reply to that comment!) :D

At least Aoki will have pretty much have to fight at lightweight for a while now. Hansen-Aoki 2?

Here's hoping Zaromskis-High and Galvao-Mach in the semi's.

Re Aoki, and that's why they have weight classes.
Anyone else think Andrews Nakahara might be the sleeper in the bunch?
As for my underdog favorite, Minowaman (who is cultivating quite the nice tail on his mullet of late), let's hope it's not another three years for his next victory, WAR MINOWA!!!

Monson choking out Sergei was nice! Sherdog had it listed as an easy win for Sergei, I disagreed with that lol.

I didn't expect Aoki to get destroyed like that but props to Sakurai, I was going to put points on him but decided to stay away from the main event.

Good show from DREAM, always like seeing a Rua lose.

Just got finished watching most of the fights, still have the few fights to go.

Sakurai absolutely destroyed Aoki, not much to say about that fight, except that Aoki banks on his excellent BJJ and is always in the line of fire when facing a much stronger and aggressive opponent. Sakurai did everything right. He attacked right off the bat and didnt give Aoki a single second to develop his ground game, which is how one has to fight against him. Glad to see more fighters utilize the knees to the head, I thought it was getting extinct for a while.

What can I say about Galvao, that I havent already said in the betting thread... hes the real deal. His BJJ is impressive, a work of art. Hes a strong kid with solid fundamentals. I dont think Galvao is going to get beat on the ground anytime soon, however, there are flaws in his stand up. He needs to learn how to put his hands up properly. I see Galvao as another Ricardo Arona in the making.

Its actually a pleasant surprise seeing Monson submit a once top ten HW. The man just fought a few weeks ago at March Badness and now he is in Japan beating Sergei. You have to admit, grappling is Monsons bread and butter and when he gets you on the ground, chances are you might be going to sleep. I thought Sergei would maybe beat him by strikes. He actually had the chance to mount him at one point, but I think there was an absolute disadvantage of conditioning here. While Monson is staying busy fighting multiple times a year, Sergei has been plagued by injuries. Beautiful win for Monson.

Hideo Tokoro and DJ Haiki was a bit of a disappointment for me. Not the fight itself, but Tokoros tactical mistake being too persistant to get a takedown, when Haiki was clearly gassed and probably would have lost a serious exchange of punches in the 2nd round. Haiki is an aggressive fighter, who did an excellent job of cutting Tokoro off and going in for the kill, but those upkicks from Tokoro had him hurt bad and Hideo could have sealed the deal.

I'm so happy for Monson! I think more for the reason that I've always felt Kharitonov was overrated. Extremely happy to see Aoki get his overrated block knocked off too! Good morning to meeee! :)

Thanks for the writeup, tcc.

Aoki...hah. I just watched that one.
That was even better than the Hellboy beatdown he took. 27 seconds. :D

:sport-smi5

Galvao looked good. The way they were maneuving at the end, I thought Alessio's arm was going to get ripped off there.

Monson sure didn't waste any time.

...off to watch some more...

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!SSSPPPOOOIIILLLEEERRRSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. Katsuyori Shibata def. Minowaman by UD. A bit of an upset to start the night. Shibata literally won this fight in the last 3 minutes, he actually looked like a respectable fighter, while Minowa looked gassed, heartless, and all around weak.

http://www.bjj.com.au/main/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/fight-sakurai-versus-shibata.jpg
Hint: He's on the bottom gettin' face-punched.

2. Andrews Nakahara def. Shunga Oyama by TKO RD1. Nice quick fight. Oyama rolled for a leg lock, and Nakahara landed a nice soccer kick, and followed it up for the victory.

http://www.yorkblog.com/mma/img/Sakuraba-vs-Nakahara.jpeg
Hint: Gettin his neck crank on

3. Vitor Shaolin Ribeiro def Katsuhiko Nagata by TKO (Cut) RD1. Shaolin opens up a vicous bleeder with a knee from sidecontrol which ends up stopping the fight.

http://www.mmaontap.com/media/ribeiro450.jpg

4. Riki Fukuda def. Murilo Rua by UD. Lackluster effort by Ninja. Fukuda rocked Ninja late in the fight which definately got him the win.

http://www.cdn.sherdog.com/_images/fighter/20081018055230_fukuda.JPG

5. Jeff Monson def. Sergey Kharitonov by North-South choke RD1. Well, when as expected for Monson, he took Sergey down and choked him with his gigantic bicep. He also won me some points!!

http://www.knucklepit.com/_tjeff%20monson3.jpg

6. Dj.taiki def Hideo Tokoro by UD. Most entertaining fight so far, even though my boy Tokoro was on the wrong side of a beating.

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/wp-content/gallery/misc-images-xix/dj-taiki-cosplay-mma-1.jpg
Hint: Ggggggggggghhhhhheeeeyyyy!!!

7. Andre Galvao def. John Alessio by Armbar RD1. Galvao messed around with standup for a few minutes before getting a TD and working for a RNC, eventually transisitioning to the armbar for the win.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0bFAbcjj-VE/R8KP_w-A74I/AAAAAAAAAIQ/OO5MdwC9ky0/s320/%E3%82%AC%E3%83%90.jpg

8. Marius Zaromskis def Seichi Ikemoto by UD. Close decision, but Zaro takes it after doing much more damage in RD2. He tried a full backflip kick thing when Ikemoto was on he back. Would've been badass if it landed.

http://mmaimpact.com/fight_images/zarom.jpg

9. Jason High def. Yuya Shirai by RNC RD1. High catches him and knocks him down and then finishes with the choke. Yuya sleeps on the mat.

http://mmaimpact.com/fight_images/jasonhigh.jpg

10. Hayato Sakurai def Shinya Aoki by TKO RD1. Sweet! Pornstar annihilates crybaby in under a minute. Mach came charging across the ring to start, Aoki took him down and Mach landed a knee and hammerfists for the win!

Hint: Yes, that picture is from what you think it's from.

Check N.O.B for a few weigh in photos. Everyone on weight, Aoki is 2kg below, and that may play a factor in his matchup vs Mach. I can see Mach spending the whole fight on top holding Aoki down and powering out of submission ala their first matchup.

Fukuda/Rua is at catchweight of 89kg.

Hopefully I can watch live, I'll try to post if I do.

N.O.B now says that 2008 DEEP Middleweight GP runner-up Riki Fukuda will replace Sik Yoon.

That was quick. Good job by DREAM and Riki for getting an opponent for Ninja.
