MMA Madness’ Andre Fernandes will take readers on a whirlwind tour of the Brazilian MMA scene during the first week of every month in a column titled “Brazilian Scene.” Here is his first recap of some of the major news coming out of Brazil.

Avalanche beats Tsunami in MTL semifinals

Team Avalanche won its semifinal match in the Brazilian MMA team league, MTL. The fighters, trained by Antonio Rogério Nogueira, defeated Team Tsunami, trained by Pedro Rizzo, by a score of 3-2. The event had an awkward moment when Júlio César Almeida, from Team Avalanche, cried in his corner during the second round break. Almeida didn't want to come back for the third round, but his teammates convinced him to do so. In the most anticipated fight of the night, Fábio Maldonado passed Vitor Miranda and won by decision. Now Team Avalanche will face Team Wild Fire, trained by Murilo Bustamante, at the league's final.

JZ Calvancante’s bombastic interview

Considered one of the most feared lightweights in the world, Gesias "JZ Calvan" Calvancante has great striking and a good ground game together with great takedown ability and a devastating ground-and-pound. In a recent interview, he talked about his title saying that he has no problems with André Dida even though they didn't touch gloves. He also showed respect for Kid Yamamoto, whom some say is running from JZ, and emphasized that he'd love to unify his belt and that he's currently training very hard to be the most complete fighter in the world.
