Monson Could Be Fedor's First Opponent

Jeff MonsonTen-year MMA veteran and former UFC fighter Jeff Monson (23-7 MMA, 4-3 UFC) says he may be the first fighter to face noted heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (26-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) under the M-1 Global banner.
Monson made the comments while speaking to Boa Athu for a Sherdog.com report.
Earlier this week, M-1 Global — a new organization born out of the former Russian-based M-1 Mixed Fight promotion — held a press conference to announce a new ownership group, its newly minted CEO Monte Cox, and the signing of what is arguably the No. 1 fighter in the world, Emelianenko.
At the time of the press conference, Cox stated that additional signings would be made in the next couple weeks, and based on comments from Monson, he may be one of them.
Monson confirmed that he’s in talks with M-1 Global and that there’s a “very good possibility” that he’ll fight Emelianenko in his first fight with the organization. During Monday’s press conference, Cox said that Emelianenko would headline their first event. A date hasn’t been announced for the event, though M-1 officials believe it’ll happen as soon as February.
The 34-year-old Monson last competed for the UFC during an unsuccessful title fight against Tim Sylvia at UFC 65. After that unanimous-decision loss, he scored a first-round submission victory over Kazuyuki Fujita at PRIDE 34 before suffering a third-round TKO to Pedro Rizzo at a Sept. 1 Art of War event.
Emelianenko, who owns a near-perfect 26-1 record, has posted victories over many of sport’s top fighters, including Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic, Mark Coleman, Mark Hunt and Matt Lindland. He held PRIDE’s heavyweight title from March 2003 until the organization’s eventual demise a few months ago.

Well, Monson is no can, I think he could give Fedor a good fight.

I'm a big Monson fan but I honestly don't think he has a shot in hell at beating Fedor. If he can though, more power to him, lol.

i will believe this when it becomes official. However i do believe that Jeff does bring a solid game to the table. He has decent hands, good wrestling and good BJJ. Fedor of course if Fedor. His only weakness might be that he has'nt had a match in what seems like years.

This is good news, I was really looking forwards to this fight when it was rumored last year. If it happens I will probably put a few points on The Snow Man.

unfortunately i cannot do the same. Jeff is a master technician but its his conditioning that usually does him in. depending on who he works with before this fight will determine if i bet on him or not.

Good news. I actually wouldn't mind seeing that one. I would rather see that than the rumor of him fighting Shamrock.

Wrong. Monson's an awesome boxer, he just has trouble showing it against guys who have an 8 inch reach advantage.

I have always thought that Monson would do well against Fedor based on thier respective body types. In this fight Monson will be the heavier of the two without having to give up too much height. as for being an awesome boxer? I'll just say he's a decent boxer by MMA standards. His 3 professional bouts were against novices in the sport with one exception. I do have to say though, that when a guy who weighs 240 and is 5'8" hits you its probably going to hurt. Lots of power in his build.
jeff's boxing record boxer Jeff Munson

Munson? Are you sure it's the same guy? Jeff's also from the Northwest, and this dude's out of Florida.

i know the name is mispelled but its him. Jeff may be from the Northwest but he spends alot of time training at ATT in Florida. he also does alot of his conditioning work with JC Santana who runs IHP which is also in Florida. So there really is'nt anything odd about him boxing in Florida.
