Default MMA Madness Q&A: One-on-one with KJ Noons

In a year in which the word “upset” has taken on a new meaning in MMA, KJ Noons truly shocked the MMA world Saturday night when he stopped Nick Diaz (via doctor stoppage) at Elite XC: Renegade in Corpus Christi, Texas. Noons, a former PRIDE FC “Best Striker” audition winner in 2005, upset the favored Diaz with a combination of powerful strikes and impressive wrestling defense to become Elite XC’s first lightweight champion. MMA Madness’ Ryan McKinnell caught up with Noons via telephone on Monday to get his feelings on the Diaz fight and to talk about his place in the lightweight division.

MMA Madness: How are you doing on this fine Monday KJ?

Noons: Man, I’m good.

MMA Madness: So, how’s it feel to be a champion bro?

Noons: It feels amazing, it feels great--words can’t even describe. I put in a lot of hard work and it all paid off I guess you could say.

MMA Madness: Most definitely, I remember after the Edson Berto fight a while back we did an interview. Not to give our little tandem too much credit but it was the first interview in which you called out Diaz. You said something along the lines of, “I know he’s got a better record and there might be people more qualified, but no one will give him a more exciting fight”. Now I posted this interview on some forums and what followed was a hail storm of negativity. People were saying you didn’t stand a chance and you had nothing for him etc. That has to feel great to get that win on your record and prove all the doubters wrong.
