Nothing says high profile fights like a Wednesday night. The WEC offers some hump day solace with a showcase of the lower weight classes. Can Carlos Condit’s “Natural Born Killer” psyche conquer past demon Carlo Prater? Is “Razor” Rob McCullough’s ground game going to be dull against Jamie Varner? And coming off a title defense, Chase Beebe runs into another Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu stylist in Miguel Torres.
Carlos Condit must prove his 170lbs. championship status under the hot glares of his home crowd in Alburquerque, New Mexico. A fighter that has battled from Hawaii to Japan, he has admitted there is unusual pressure to perform for his local brethren. Factor in the mental disadvantage of fighting the first man to defeat him, Carlo Prater, and Condit’s titleholder edge dissipates.
Prater has a rigid but effective muay Thai style. Throwing combinations as he does is a nice counter to a Condit’s kickboxing. However, Condit has adapted well with knees and clinch game. The Rumble on the Rock veteran has a rangy striking game, which is where Prater feels comfortable standing. But don’t expect the Texan to use his push kick as Condit’s evolved game should force Prater to bring the fight to the mat.
On the ground, Prater’s Thug-jitsu pedigree landed him a triangle victory over the current WEC welterweight king. Stylistically, the Art of War veteran’s fight instincts and pride won’t allow him to bring the fight to the ground unless he is hurt. Bringing the fight to where it was finished before should give Prater confidence, but Condit’s fast hips and lanky frame make for a dangerous guard—especially if Prater is attempting to realign his head.
