BET's Iron Ring
Quote:
|
Combat sports just got tougher. From the creator of ULTIMATE FIGHTING CHALLENGE - one of the most successful new sports formats in entertainment - comes IRON RING, a new show that introduces ‘new jack’ celebrities from music, sports and Hollywood to the most dangerous fighters in the world. An all-star line-up of celebrities will manage teams of fighters in the best mixed martial arts match-ups on television. From a steel ring above the arena, the celebrity ‘owners’ will interact with their gladiators between rounds – and sometimes right in the middle of them. Each week, as top competitors enter the battle zone to face off using the combined techniques of jiu-jitsu, judo, karate, boxing, kickboxing and wrestling, viewers will witness true-to-life bone-crushing, face-smashing sports entertainment unlike anything ever seen before. Only the strong will survive!

It starts in five minutes, I'm very skeptical but I will check it out and write a quick review.

Meh, quick summary of the format:
There are a number of teams, each team has an owner.
Owners:
nelly
luda shonie carter
lil jon
mayweather
TI
(and all of their posses)
Each team also has a coach. The professional coaches seemed to be versed in different martial arts but not really experienced in MMA (with the exception of Shonie Carter) Crazy Horse is a coach for Floyd Mayweather. He brags about how he is never trained for a fight.
They bring in people which test tryout's cardio striking and grappling abilities. The owners assess them. Some tryouts are fights in the ring, in a crowded smokey building.
This was painful to watch. Not due to the format, or the people involved, but the production was horrible. It seemed like they were never in one room or focusing on one topic for more than 10 seconds. The people themselves seem disorganized in the entire process. Maybe after everything settles down and the format of the show gets into a groove it will be something people will take an interest in. The ring doesn't look that bad:

I recorded it. It sounds pretty lame...I'll probably give it a shot but not expecting much.
Is that Herb Dean in the pic? Did he screw things up again?

Wasn't expecting much and the first show was just talk, repetitive at that.
Second show was better and actually looked a bit unorganized in the begining, but took a little more shape as it neared the end.Looks like it could be interesting and it was refreshing to see fighters from all backgrounds represented.I thought the fact that most teams first picks were non Black fighters kind of put that "racist" label to rest for now anyway.
Let's hope it's entertaining and serious and not just a flash in the pan.

I love all MMA, but it's a role reversal with this show! On TUF, the coaches act all professional and stuff (except Ken and Tito), and the fighters act like they have no sense. This time, the fighters are all grown up acting and the owners are acting stupid. Why is ignorance so popular in America these days? I have very intelligent friends that act ignorant so that they'll be seen as "cool". The first show was a waste of time, but at least we saw some action in the 2nd show!

This is one crazy show.
I was surprised to see guys like Wes Sims, Alexis Aquino, Doug Gordon.
lwbfl - good point about the level of professionalism. It seemed more like a big joke...the guys sitting around in the "VIP area" watching the fight screaming "submission submission"...very broad term if you're trying to give some advice.
Also, what are the rules?
Of course I'll keep recording it but I might need to put on the close-captioning.

Yeah, it's funny how during the fight, the top fighter was caught in a headlock (bottom man going for guillotine but top man passed to side control) and TI or whoever was yelling "Watch the triangle" over and over. Shonie Carter was the best pick for this show, he'll fit right in with his silly self.

I watched it today and I thought it was ok, I love MMA and it is a source to watch MMA so I am game. The way some of the owners acted was rather immature as they constantly spit out over-used cliches. I did notice as someone mentioned earlier when TI was screaming "watch out for the triangle" when the guy was caught in a gullitine which I found to be pretty funny. The ending when the guy was challenging any MW to take their place was more than enough to make me want to watch again. I am very interested to see what that guy has b/c he sure did talk the talk.
Its like I said, its not the greatest but it is MMA and I am glad to see it continuously branching out regardless of what channel it is on b/c that just shows that MMA is on the rise.....

Watched a little bit of it last night.
Very raw talent and ridiculous coaches. Doubt I watch it again.

I saw E1 and 3. The first sucked donkey (*****) Really crap.
Just finished the thirth. It was alot better. Three fights, quick ones. They take the best fights out off a full day off fighting, so what you gonne see is good. But a the bigger picture is still not clear for me.
